Windjammer haters please don't read.
« on: March 20, 2017, 02:43:05 PM »
Is there a product or a technique to clear up the yellow on the vetter windshield vents? I've been using Eagle one nano wax and a microfiber towel on the windshield. It doesn't seem to help the yellowing vents.

I think new vents are available but I have the time and I'm cheap.

What about those kits you would use to get rid of the haze on plastic headlights?

I wouldnt use a headlight restore kit on it, before anyone wines heres the reason. I use one on my ol ladies car headlights and it got rid of the haze but the sealer packs left some kind of funk thats not quite as bad as the haze but u wouldnt want to try to see through it.

Plexiglas has 2 types of problems.  It can haze/yellow over time then it can be crazed with many tiny cracks.  If you have cracks you have to replace it.  The haze/yellowing can be "restored" by using rubbing compound followed by polishing compound.  It's time consuming to do but works quite well.  I have done it on headlight lenses and aircraft wind shields.  You can buy drill attachments that have foam bobs on the end.  You need a different bob for each compound.

Here is a weird one a guy showed me one time......Give it a squirt with Off insect repellant then buff it out. Not long lasting, but it works.

I know, I didn't believe it either!

I hate to disagree with some of the previous recommendations here..but Lucite/acrylic resin/methylmethacrylate (which is what most windscreens are made from) tends to "acetylate" or turn yellow over time (years usually) and when exposed to UV radiation. It's a chemical reaction that permeates the entire structure of the plastic.  Buffing..polishing..etc..will not remove it..because it's part of the plastic by the time it develops.

You have a couple of options: either live with it (not entirely unacceptable)..or replace the windscreen. How do I know?  I have training in polymer chemistry..and I've used acrylic resins as a dental laboratory technician (think denture fabrication) working with the stuff for over 40 years.  Questions..comments?

Cheers

The windscreen is very clear for it's age, I use Lucas slick mist or Eagle 1 nanowax on it and it stays pretty nice.  The yellowing is in the vents. Obviously made from a different product.

I just checked, new windshields are $85-$100 standard to tall and the vents are $25 to $27 shipped. I guess I can afford the new vents.

There's a member on the "for sale" section selling a complete fairing with as good as brand new windshield for 50$. Wouldn't you consider that??

No,  for a couple reasons. I already have a plain windshield and 6 windjammers. Shipping is prohibitive due to the size of a windjammer, I do use the vents in the summer believe it or not, they help in the heat.
I was just hoping for a miracle juice I could pour on the vents to clear them up a little. I'm actually planning to trash a couple fairings on trash week next month, ugly ones with yucky paint and/or damage. I'll peel off any nice trim or removable parts first.

Thanks Nayl, I may give it a try. If I do, I'll report back. I can put it in my wife's tanning bed.
