Bought a '77 750 Super Sport . .
« on: March 19, 2017, 02:09:03 PM »
really, really nice shape. Has only 12K miles, previous owners went crazy with dealership tuneups and repairs . . . .  all good for me  :)  This is my first SOHC Honda. Previous owner upgraded all three calipers to twin piston types, had them powder coated as well. It has the stock exhaust, that has been ceramic coated. It has a $450 Corbin seat, etc, etc. I will be changing a lot of it though. I love the performance aspects of the F with the triple discs, etc, but am going to change it to a more vintage CB750 look. That's me, I make everything look older. I brought it home yesterday, so I tinkered a bit today. It had a lot of engine noise at idle. I adjusted the cam chain a couple times and got rid of any noise there. Only noise left is from the clutch at idle with the lever not pulled. Once the engine warms this rattle goes away. Is this normal? Or should I adjust the clutch tolerance with the lever not engaged? I tested the charging system and have over 14V at 3Krpms . .but at idle not much, if any, over battery voltage. is this normal for these bikes? I want to fit an older tank, side covers, a seat that works, older fenders, etc. I'm technically capable, but would listen to views from others who have done similar things, as the best parts to seek, etc.

I'm including a couple past bikes ( Harley I still own )that have had extensive modifications . .even if they don't look like it  :) That's the trick.

Eventually, when I find the pieces that will replace the current setup. It was bought last July, not even a year old, like 500 miles on it  :)

Idle rattle you described is normal as is the charging scenario.  Pull in clutch and rattle goes away, hit 3000 rpm and voltage goes to 14+,  right?  Welcome....Larry

Any ideas on what calipers were used on my bike? All three were changed, powder coated as well. They fit the stock mounting, but are dual piston. Did the '79 up Fs use dual piston? Maybe from them????

My best guess is the calipers are from a CB900F/CB1100F from a few years later.  I've got some ready to fit to my 77 CB750F as well.

Not many people with the corbin seat for the F's.  Did the bike come from a member here?
Its normal for things to quiet down when temps come up and the idle settles.  Gotta get the juices flowin'
Dont forget the vacuum sync of the carbs.  This really helps quite things down.

No the bike wasn't from anyone here, I don't think. I didn't purchase it through a contact here.

Yes. Thats what they look like.  My 75 supersport has a different brake caliper mount and I'm looking to figure out a dual disc option for that bike as well without a fork swap or major $$.

I like this bike for the performance potential But I like the looks of the Gen 1 CB 750. So I will be switch some things. I wish I could switch my fork. But I like the dual disc and certainly like how these calipers are operating. It's easily the best brakes I have ever had on a  bike. I could get rid of the black on my lower legs, polish the leg. That would help. But I wish the leg had mounts for fender stays. I may have to create my own mount if I want to run a fender with stays. I don't want to give up the calipers   :)

I think it sounds like a bad idea to turn the 77F into an older K...but to each their own...I think it would be way easier to just get a 70-76K and go from there...either way, have fun.

I'm not interested in getting rid of it? I'm not. I guess you didn't read how I like the performance of the F. If you ever look at my builds, both bike and cars, you'll see I have done some interesting transformations.

So interested guys, it looks as if I will be getting rid of everything on the top of the bike, tank, seat, rear fender and either the entire exhaust or at least the muffler. What kind of money do you think they should bring?

The brakes are the only thing on the bike that perform significantly better than earlier models.  You will have a much nicer bike if you start with something close to what you want.  Stock resto are worth more with these.  If you want to post some better pics of your tank and tail section, I would give you an offer.

I bought a chrome 550 rear fender. I have it only bolted through the top two bolts, but it fits. I'm feeling my way here, so I wasn't sure how many of the factory mounting points would work. The F tail section will be leaving, just trying it on for size.

+1 on the performance thing.
Probably more noticeable difference in performance when they were factory fresh 40 years ago, but you'd struggle I reckon to find a K and F in similar state of fettle and wear to make a comparison today. Interestingly, I rode a mate's '74 K chopper a few years ago, no performance mods other than pods and jetting, and (in a straight line) it was equally as fast, if not quicker than either of the two F's I have subsequently owned. Butt-dyno testing obviously.  ;D
