Diagram/Options for Throttle/Controls on 76 550K
« on: December 12, 2006, 11:18:15 AM »
Does anyone have a diagram of the prats inside the controls on a 76 550K?  After putting on my clubmans, I noticed that the starter button does not pop out anymore, and I found a small spring that I assume is from the control unit.  It's a pain in the butt process to remove the bars and pull the wires to get to this part.  Would it be easier to go another route?  Can anyone provide insight into other assemblies that could be used?

I was wrong, the spring is there, but the plastic housing that it was in was shattered to pieces, rendering it useless.  All parts finders that I've seen do not list these internal parts.  If I am to buy a new/used starter switch assembly anyway, can other years/models work...maybe something more modern and with cleaner lines even?  Any thoughts?

Carefull about trying to fit a switch from a cdi type bike as the kill switch may work different as they tend to earth out the ignition rather than "Kill" the coil power

I'm running a 750 but the principle is the same, just pull some controls off of a newer bike.  You can pick them up on e-bay all day long for 15 bucks or less.  Wiring is easy, just takes a little sorting out.  I swapped over to 2006 GSXR 600 controls.  Best $35 I've spent on my bike to date.  Plus they came with new master cylinder, clutch, gel grips, levers and some clip-ons.  I'll sell the clip-ons and make a few bucks back.
The only trick to wiring the controls is to group items.  If you know what the honda side does, just look inside where the wires come out on the controls.  After a few plug ins you'll get it right.  I stared at it for a few days thinking I'd never get it done.  One day I sat down with a few beers and I had it rewired within 30 minutes.
