Desperately need a CB500 Clutch Pushrod (advicell needed)
« on: March 20, 2017, 06:04:53 PM »
Sure enough, I pulled out my clutch push rod and it's broken in 2 pieces (73 CB500). The bike was shifting fine before I pulled the cover off to polish it....but none the less, the clutch pushrod is broken in 2 pieces (nice clean break).

Does anyone have a source for these or custom make them?

Thanks or the reply. I saw that post as well from last year mentioning DSS having stock....but they are sold out unfortunately.

Did anyone decide to make their own? I saw a few posts where members were planning on machining a few to sell?

Looks like the same rod was used on a couple different models if your searching on E-bay. Might find one of these out there-- http://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/02/cb500-clutch-rod-replacement/

Thanks for all the advice....it looks like there are a few options for CB450 and CL450 push rods on EBay if they are in fact a direct fit?

Then... why bother and not leave it as it is? Look... you now have two pushrods.  ;)

Probably only worthwhile if you've got a lathe and a torch, but I think I'd try brazing it together.  Maybe drill a bit out of each section and insert a pin before brazing it.  I'd give yours a go if you were close by and didn't care what the end result was (since it's already no good.)

Why not just get a piece of 8mm Stainless Steel rod and cut to length and round off one end?
Somewhere around here I saw a length of 255mm posted. Check that though, I could be wrong.

I know you can pick up 12 inch lengths of 8mm rod for pretty cheap, like less than $5. 255mm is a tad longer than 10 inches so it should be plenty.

I used 2 pushrods from an old Pontiac V8, I used a steel pin where the 2 pieces met to keep them concentric and straight, welded it up and turned the weld down on my lathe. The Pontiac pushrods were about .002" bigger in dia than the original cb500 pushrod but worked perfectly.

*only*....I mean, is there any reason not to use any old rod? I use generic 6mm nuts and bolts all the time (not 8mm though, they're 13mm heads unless you get them from the dealer)

I can respect that but do you have a torch and a lathe to make a proper repair?

Indeed, plus a few other items that would be useful for this sort of fix.  I actually very much enjoy brazing and occasionally gas welding.

I just took apart my cb500 and I have one in great shape. It came off of a 1971.  $30 plus shipping.

This seller has one.  I have bought other parts from him.  Make an offer...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Honda-Clutch-Lifter-Rod-CB450-CL450-CB500-CB500T-CB500K-22850-323-000-NOS-/192124351864?hash=item2cbb80f578:g:T~wAAOSwWxNYwEeZ&vxp=mtr
When I first saw this link, I immediately grabbed one of these new alloy ones just in time before they swiftly sold out - I have two spare broken ones, they can work fine but can also get jammed. I now also have a spare steel one if there's more than one person interested in procuring one, John

I ended up getting a CL450 pushrod on eBay, which seemed to fit just fine. I haven't tested it on a ride yet though as I'm still in the middle of my restore.

Anyone else use a CL450/CB450 pushrod?

I believe the 450/500 twins used the exact same pushrod with the same part number (22850-323-000). The ones I have vary in length slightly, but there is more than enough adjustment available to make up for the differing lengths.

Me and my dad made one from 8 mm roundbar for my K1 and I´ve clutched my bike for about 800 km, no worries. Not sure about the length though. If I recall mine is 265....but I´ve been wrong once before...I´m told

If you make your own, make sure you use hard iron and not stainless steel (too soft). The hardened steel on the end of the original aluminium Honda pushrod is there for a reason. It takes quite a load.

Drill rod is a very consistent diameter material, comes in 8mm, is machinable and could be hardened at the ends w/o much trouble.
