1976 CB550K, not running
« on: March 23, 2017, 02:23:07 PM »
Hello all,
Finally got the time to sit and write down, introduction of my (soon to be here) CB550

I found a 1976 CB550k in US. single owner who purchased it exactly 40 years ago in March 1977. Bike has been in garage storage for (I guess) over 20-25 years. It seems very clean from photos. A Vetter fairing (windjammer SS) with vented windshield and engine guards, high/ tall sissybar backrest.

PO stated that years ago (when last rode) bike was due for valve adjustment service which was not done and he rode it for about 500 miles trip. Upon return as getting home, bike made some high pitch sound/noise and engine lost power and stopped. Engine rolls with kick paddle.

I bought it and got a transportation company to bring it over to Ontario Canada. They are waiting to consolidate their load and I anticipate first week of April I shall have it in my garage.

I am not sure what sort of work it will require but I have prepared myself for top end job.

I would like to know what steps I shall follow once I have the bike here? I was considering following;

1. Drain oil, remove filter, add new oil and filter
2. Drain fuel tank, check for rust, if bad, clean and add new fuel
3. Check/ replace fuel lines
4. Open, Clean and install carbs and spark plugs
5. Carry out compression test

or if it is okay to do compression test without changing oil and filter. I am so much looking forward to fixing and putting her back on road.

I know most of you guys have done great deals of mods and jobs on your respective bikes and this may not be a complex job to seek guidance.

Thanks,

Instead of doing the compression test, remove the plugs, put 1/8 cup of oil in each cylinder,  let stand for two days, and then roll over with the kick starter.  The rings are very dry after all that time.

I'd Second the notion of pulling the plugs and drizzling some oil down the cylinders. But I'd also drain the oil and inspect it, plus the filter.

Remove the tank, carbs and thoroughly clean both. When you get it running, these two things will be required anyway.

You can undertake the 3,000 mile service interval from the manual as a good basis on where to start to refurbish your new bike. It all needs to be done, so doing it now while the oil soaks is as good a time as any.

When you ou have the carbs apart, reuse the stock brass, but take careful note of jet sizes, needle clip positions and air screws

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
