inner hub spacer

I was breaking down a older cb750 front wheel to change out the bearings and found the inner spacer missing. Can I find and use any spacer that measures from the inside two bearings? I would hate to have to source and full hub only for a spacer.

It really depends on whether the spacer is sized so that the balls are centralised in their races or whether it is slightly smaller so that they are pre-loaded slightly.

I think my choice would be to machine the spacer so that the ball bearings are exactly centred in the outer bearing races when it is all fitted together.

I had someone install my rear wheel without the spacer and it was a bad experience.  One of the bearings pushed the retainer and ripped out all the threads.  The wheel went  catawampus and could have seized.

Yeah, I'll definitely not go without adding a spacer.
