Tell you what Uncle Ernie, be glad that Matchless is out of business or you would be looking for a lawyer now....
There was a spanish company in the fifties named Pegaso who made trucks -lorries for the brits-, and even some sport cars. It was a big effort in a devastated country, and with banned imports, Pegaso trucks transported everything in this country and became part of our culture. They were out of business a couple of decades ago and the company got bought by IVECO, though just a few more Pegaso trucks were made, although with "badge engineering"
The logo of the brand was the mythical Pegasus horse
to the surprise of some of the brand lovers and collectors, a german tuner (
www.carlsson.de( for Mercedes cars adopted this logo....
the spaniards contacted the german brand asking about the logo copy. The brand owner got very interested, he said they paid an advertising company to design the logo. He didn't know about Pegaso trucks or buses. At the end, he asked what the spaniards wanted and in the name of who did they speak. They didn't represent the brand nor have any rights about it, and Carlsson's lawyers said "it is different enough not to be considered a copy". So the germans are still using the same horse as logo.
At least they tried to satisfy the upset spaniards. Had it been a chinese company, that copy everything completely unashamed, and they would have not even replied...
