combo switch and throttle replacement
« on: June 16, 2005, 04:54:05 PM »

has anyone replaced their turn signal combo and/or throttle assembly with something other than OEM?

my combo is broke and they both look every day of their 35 years old in condition and STYLE. So after i buy a used combo switch and send the combo and throttle to paint i might as well buy new ones. And if i buy new ones i would like them to look a little less like lumps of lead on the end of my new clubmans (thanks Carpy).

Any sugjestions and advice would be greatly appretiated.

well ultimately, the controls can be switched with anything. It just depends on how much work you want to do. As long as the items fit a 7/8 inch handbar or what ever you have if you replaced the bars, you will be fine. The biggest problem is wiring and the throttle cables. Maybe the clutch cable. Like I said, depends on the work you want to do. anything from 70 - 78 will work with little modification or work.

Well...
Style is subjective.   Maybe you should tell us what style YOU think is worthy?

I think Honda did a good job of making the bar controls as small as they did and still get all that functionality inside them.  But, then I'm more of a form follows function kind of guy.  Eye candy is nice but if it doesn't do anything...well the clutter builds up.  And, land fills are full of things that had style and little else, but are now passe.

Damn, I think I broke my soapbox...Whack!

just something a little less. I agree that function makes its own style but they look like big round lumps of metal. Which is what they are but some newer stuff that has a little less to it would be nice.

And yes almost anything that you could get to bolt to your bars would work. I only was hoping that someone had stumbled across something that was newer and would be a semi-easy retrofit.

I have found a handfull of Push - pull throttles but they were designed for carbs up to 38mm and had no start button or kill switch. The electric start isnt really a must but it is nice to have. The carbs on my bike are 42mm.

It would also be nice if the turn signal combo and throttle matched in some eye pleasing way.

For less than $200 i could buy brand new OEM stuff. I just wanted to see...

One of Each

I have a 76 Supersport and the turn switch is an alumimum type  color ( looks like it wasn't painted).  The throttle and kill switch side is a nice black with red highlights on the switch.  Which one is correct?  And while I'm on the subject, the speedo is a sea green color and looks like it hasn't been in the sun that long, however the tach is a forest green color and the red line area is very faded.  Which one is correct?

I don't want it to go like a motorcycle, I want it to go like a rocket!

The 76 USA models had light green instrument faces, and Black anodized bar control housings.
(They fade (sublimate actually) in the sun.)
