hard shifting/possibly stuck
« on: March 28, 2017, 06:05:11 PM »
so i've had the new to me bike running for a couple of months.  first few weeks i had car motor oil in it because of my ignorance.  drained that out once i found out there is a difference and replaced it with quicksilver 20-50.  couldn't find spectro or really any other options.  today on a 20 minute ride around our vast hood i noticed hard shifting and what seemed like it wouldn't go into 4th or 5th.  the feeling at my foot was the same as when you are in 5th and think you are in 4th and look for that last gear and there is nothing.  maybe i miscounted and i was in 5th but for the speed it didn't add up to that.  regardless of the miscount or not shifting, it definitely felt rougher than it has.  temps were about the same over the last couple weeks here.  high 50s/low 60s.  prior to me having the bike it sat for 2 or more years.  i have only changed the oil twice.  one time to car 10-40 and second time to MC 20-50.  any input appreciated.

My 550 hated 20w50 even in the middle of the summer. It acted a lot like that, with false gears and whatnot.

going to try mc 10-40.  my option seems to be valvoline at the walmartz.  they might also have quicksilver in 10-40.  there is a honda shop within 5 miles of here but it seems they only deal in the modern stuff.

Is this a 750?

Does it happen when the engine is cold and hot, or only hot?

yes 750. never happened before today.  i'd say the bike was warmed up sufficiently.  i don't have a MC license yet so i've kept it off the main roads and stay in my fairly large neighborhood.  but it's 5 mins into a ride after letting the bike warm up a bit in the driveway.

I would say your problem will only get worse by going to a thinner oil. Take the clutch plate steels out & polish them up, so they're nice & smooth. That should help. Also check the gear shift drum selector. I've seen that thin steel plate on the end bent up/mangled from bike being dropped on LH side. I discovered this when rebuilding my K2 project. Won't shift real good like that!

Didn't you replace the clutch recently?
The washer under the center lock nut might be flipped and mounted in wrong way. The convex surface outwards under the nut so it can act like a spring.
There was a case here where the owner did not find 5:th gear due to the wrong mounted washer. CB750

I would concentrate on the many other issues you have posted about first before tearing out the clutch unless your confident to get in there and do it. Have a new cover gasket ready and pay close attention to how things came apart and read up on putting it all back together so you don't break anything. An aluminum plate with a bearing in it the covers the clutch springs breaks easily sometimes when not put back together correctly.

Tell me more about these false neutrals because of 20w50!  (It happens to me too)

there is a honda shop within 5 miles of here but it seems they only deal in the modern stuff.

FYI - honda still puts dead dinosaur oil into their "modern" crankcases.
Naturally the dealership is going to have new models on display.  But they're going to have the same ol motor oil on the parts shelf.
Just go there and get you some gn4.

Did you check the clutch cable adjustment? Does it lurch or clunk hard when dropped into gear from neutral?

Polish the steel plates, really?
I let my shop glass blast mine just a litlle for grip since I had some slippage back in the 80's.  They still work fine with my existing cheap Cruzinimage chinese fibers.

I'm currently having 10-40 mineral oil in now due to break-in new pistons/cylinder. Clucth work fine, only the typical problem to find neautral when engine is warm and running. Off and the neutral will easy slip in.
The oil in now has only been used 160km (100miles).  About 850km more and I'll change to 20W-50 mineral, same model, Motul 4100. I'll see how that will feel.
If neutral will still be difficult to find, I'll change earlier to my  20W-50 synth oil that is waiting for entering the engine that I know work fine clutch wise and neutral. Synth is not recommended for breake-in.

I'll try Motul 5100 15W-50 semi-synth in my K2 when I have assembled it and it has been broken in with 4100. It's currently a project in pieces on the floor, shelves, paper bags, boxes, Honda labeled bags, Yamiya boxes and David silver boxes.....
