RustyOlive's FATTY 550 build.
« on: April 01, 2017, 10:31:00 AM »
Well.. isn't this fun?! Lol

Olivia cb550/650 cafe won April 2017 BOTM (today) and I just picked up a few more goodies for another build (planing stages) I'm doing for my girl. So I figured I should maybe try a build thread on this one too and maybe try to update it more frequentl than Olivia's. Hahaha.

So starting out with 78 CB550 frame, motor and swingarm.
1969 CB350 Super Sport tank metal flaked blue someone did many many years ago. Patina is really sweet. But the inside is really bad. Hopefully I can clean it out good enough for use again.
16" front and rear Harley Davidson drop center rims. Chromed Cb750 hubs to match.

On the hunt for a cheap CBR (non usd) front end or Triumph Bonnivlle.

Plan is to make a fat tire lowered cb550 on 16" 5.00 classic firestones (yes... i know theres lots of haters out there on the firesones.. but my cb750 is still running them and rides great)

I'll try to upload some more detail photos as I go along. For now a good friend helped me render a digital drawing of the bike. Hope this helps clarifies my vision. Lol

69 cb350 super sport tank.

Love the outside. Just going to clean it up. Reclear it.
Inside however needs a lot of love.
Need to track down new knee pads, emblems, and cap.

What drawing program did you use for your rendering.  Nice job.  It really helps when you can assemble your ideas visually.

Really like that flake. Believe that color to be Bass Boat Blue. Used to have a mountain bike painted that color.

I actually didn't do the drawing. I gave my "shopping list" and photo of the tank to my buddy who's really talented on that stuff and he did the drawing over a few days.

I like the tank.  I'm hoping you can rehab it.  Those spots where the paint is cracking on the top with rust below might need some patching/brazing -- let's hope not.

I'm in to follow this one.

How are you going to get rust out of the cracks? Dunk the tank in Evoporust?

I won't be going crazy at getting the rust off the outer surface. Whatever I can remove with steel-wool before epoxying the paint chips back on I'll be happy with. the inside is going to take more attention. got a buddy thats good at that sorta stuff, I'll probably hand it to him.
took years for mother nature to work her artistry at creating a prefect patina.. be a shame to remove it. LOL
