Free/cheap web page?
« on: December 15, 2006, 12:42:59 PM »
I need to start a web page as a store front for some things I am selling.  Does anyone know of a free or cheap place to get one?  I see that the ones I found on google are $5 to $10 per month.  Is this as cheap as I will find them?  I thought I could get one for free, but I can seem to find them.

Thank, cleveland

Have you checked with your ISP? Usually your ISP will provide web hosting space, but they may have some restrictions on commercial use of the space.

If you go straight through Go Daddy you can get a killer deal. Plus you could register a few other RANT-AT-THIS.com's if you felt like it for next to no money. A resellers account gives you the greatest freedom. This allows you to sell web space to other people to recover the cost of having the service to start with. Watch this, as that can be a double edged sword when the server dives. There are services that will alert you when a server you are on goes down, then you could just take your phone off the hook.  ;D

You will need a full blown .com so stay away from the free services. With webhosting costing little more than $5 a month for a real .com there is no other way to go. The expense comes in registering your .com. not the hosting. This lets all of the DNS servers know who and where your web site is. When setting up this may take as much as 3 days to fully propagate.

I have not been billed for my web hosting in better than a year..... ??? ::) Good thing the hosting is through a buddy. ;D

Good point, otherwise you end up with some obscure URL.

Also think through carefully on your .com name. You want it easy to yell out a window. Or easy to say to just about anyone without having to spell it out. Short is best. Think through this carefully as this will affect your end result.

Depending how many pages you have to create, there are quite a few free services available through Google and Yahoo that you can use without first setting up a domain or even if you do have a domain name, setting up pages and listing products here is a good way to help generate traffic back to your store front.

You might want to take a look at base.google.com for instance

You can register your domain name (aka URL) at domainsite.com for $7.95/year.
Other places will give you names if you sign up for web hosting with them.
verisign (one of the originals) will be more ($30 - or so)

There are 1000's of web hosting companies on line - Just Google "web hosting"

I agree with El Cheapo - your name should be something that is short and memorable and a true dot com.

Free sights leave you with a URL like

Try telling that to your friends and customers.   ???

Good Luck   ;D  ;D  ;D

OK so I set up a free site, here it is:

http://www.geocities.com/cb750caferacer/watchesandgifts.html?1166316475234

Other then the ridiculous length for the site, is seems like it will work.  ;D

BTW this is not spam, just off season discussion.  If you feel this is spam, I will remove it.
