Left side cover cb750

Why is it so hard to find the left-side side cover for a cb750? eBay has many r/s covers but very few left. I finally found a NOS sunrise orange cover to replace my slightly faded original. Almost ten years looking!

I feel ya. I have a little broken off piece on the part that faces the airbag on the left side but can't both repairing as I think it's near impossible to paint back and not stand out.

Victory though, right? How much did it cost you?

Think about it, L side needs to come off to access electrical, R side does not.
They typically get broken when being removed forcefully.

Kinda what I figured, but the r/s has the hole for the oil cap and seems weaker.

Damn. That's a lot of pretty pennies. Once the JB weld repair of the cracks on my covers fail they're probably going to be thousands! I should learn how to perform the Honda paint job.

Can't you get a blank one and paint it? Many sites sell blank covers. I'm in the same situation. My left side cover shattered when attempting to remove.

I bought fiberglass covers to my K6 in early 80's. Honda OEM cracked very easy. I know since then that is not good to lean bike to the leg pressing on the cover.
The fiberglass version is very durable. Maybe not available.

Because when the bikes were just old junky used bikes the side cover rubber would shrink and harden and then the wind on the highway would peel the left sidecover off the bike above 60mph. The right is held in by the oil cap and will bang about and eventually crack and break but won't instantly be set free to the wind. After I lost 2 that way I started buying all the left side covers I could find at swap meets and yard sales (pre-internet days). I'm sure I am not the only one hoarding these.

yes, no, maybe. Depends how good you are. Even if you use the same paint codes some of the honda paints are "candy" paints like Candy Ruby Red and Candy Blue Green (There are 9 different candy colors across the years for just CB750s). The thing about a candy paint is that it carries the color in the clear itself instead of the opaque base coat. That means that each successive coat darkens the color's hue and depending on the base coat can change the color's tint. For example Candy Bacchus Olive is not a green paint, it is the result of Candy Gold over Metallic Blue base (or vice versa but I think that's right - let's just assume it is). Too few clear coats and the color is too blue, too many and the color shifts back to too gold but it also gets darker and harder to see the flake through. The skill is getting just the right amount of coats to emulate the factory paint.

The other problem is...does anybody know what the original color's hue and tint is actually supposed to be? paint is susceptible to fade and candy paint is twice if not more "fragile" when it comes to fade. So unless you have a NOS part that has not seen the light of day in 40 years it's hard to say what is "correct". Professional restorers struggle with "correct" hue on cars with single stage opaque laquer paints so candy paints...forget about it there is no "100% accurate replica"

Finally candy paint is subject to variation. Hondas painted on an overcast Monday may be a different shade from Hondas painted on a sunny Friday due to weather conditions and human error. So there is a "range" to get it right.

It's one of those things where close enough is good enough and honestly don't sweat it too much. As long as the bike is shiny and it's approximately the right shade you are good.

There are "Paint codes" they are just meaningless because they belong to a company that is long out of business. Honda America endorsed a company called Lubri-tech to be the aftermarket supplier of touch-up and collision repair paint for honda motorcycles because Honda was not supplying any itself. When you see a honda paint code it's usually a Lubri-tech code. The problem is that there is no rosetta stone to translate a lubri-tech code into a PPG, dupont, or BASF paint code so it's worthless.

those are colorrite paint codes. They are NOT honda factory paint codes. They were determined by color-rite matching the paint to an existing piece of bodywork, it does not correspond to anything official from honda and is completely dependent on how good a piece of bodywork colorrite used to match.

Are there paint codes? sure - anybody who has color matched is going to have a code for the paint they used.

Are there Honda Paint codes? sort of -they are technically Lubri-tech codes that were officially endorsed by Honda

Are there Honda factory paint codes that can be used to purchase a modern paint formula? No.

Close enough is good enough, or as good as you are going to get.

I think I'll get the tank and the sides covers painted at the same time so they at least match. Like you said close enough is good enough.

You can get a pretty close representation of original color under the tank/side cover badges.  My left side cover cracked like many others.  I tried the cyanoacrylate/baking soda method and it has held up better than I expected.  I had a crack in the upper left part and the bottom nubbin that attaches to the frame broke off.  The cyano/baking soda is damn strong!  I am VERY careful when I remove it and have silicone greased the attachment rubber to ease stresses.

 The reason I needed the cover is because I entered my 750K2 in the grand national meet of the Antique Motorcycle club.  I scored 93.5 out of a possible 100 points. The faded left cover cost me half a point. Modern tires cost another point. This year I should be at 96 to 97 points. (Sunrise orange color)
