Carburetor Seal Question, 1977 CB750 F2
« on: April 09, 2017, 09:11:17 AM »
Hello,
Reassembling the carburetors for my 1977 CB750 F2.  It appears there is a seal missing from the throttle shaft where it enters the body.  The felt seal for the throttle valve shaft is also missing.   Please see the attached photos with the dental pick pointing to the location. On the two inboard carburetors, the seals are present.  I can't find part numbers for these on any of the exploded views or replacements on line.  Could anyone advise me on a part number / source?
Thanks!

Yep, you can't get those parts. You can use appropriately sized o-rings (what I used) or cut some felt.

Is anyone reproducing the felts?  I could use some too.

Might try harisuluv, or cut your own.  They dont really seal anything.  They just need to be there to keep dirt out.
O-rings will compromise smooth throttle function.  Do not use them.

In theory I'm sure you're right, but with the strength of the return springs, I'm not sure it's an issue. Though, I'm sure the rubber will degrade before felt. Now it's all back together, I'm not tearing it all apart just to fix that :P

@ Airborne 82nd.
I see the pictures were missing, attachments are waiting for approval so I'll insert them in this message.

Above:  Location of the felt throttle valve shaft seal.

Above: Location of the throttle shaft square cross section rubber seal ring.

@drumstyx
Thanks for letting me know.  I've been searching on line and in forums with no result.  I'm surprised they don't appear on any exploded views that I can find either.   If they are not available I'll search for an equivalent / fabricate something.

@flybox - thanks for the tip.

If I come up with a solution that seems to work I will post it here.   Thanks!

Ran into the same issue when rebuilding the carbs on my 78F. Pic taken when the felts were being removed and being pretty fragile some didn't make it.
I found some thin felt and used some various sized hole punchs and made some up that worked fine.
I did try using Orings but the accumulated small amount of drag they created stopped the choke assembly from working correctly.

Exactly.   Dont use o-rings.  ;)
