Frame touch up paint options
« on: April 09, 2017, 06:55:48 PM »
I have few small to tiny size rust spots on frame and would like to know if anyone has done this or may recommend some paint type/ name and how to?

Would it be ok to do with small brush?
Thanks

The cheapest fastest and easiest is black spray rusteoleum enamel. I think you can buy a small can and use a brush.

Sharpie paint marker. Just like a normal sharpie but paint instead of ink. Available in black white or colors. At art supply stores.

I use VHT Frame and Rollbar spray paint from Cdn Tire.  It's available in gloss but I always use satin as I think it's a closer match to original.

Good quality stuff!

Don,
How does the finished product look when it's in the sun ?
I like to find a darker black as many of the colors I've tried from a rattle can aren't as dark.

I have typically used the oil based Rustoleum paint for frames. I have thinned it with mineral spirits and sprayed it. Touch ups are done easily with a small model brush. The rub is if your existing frame is original paint the new paint will be much different in finish and shine.

Make sure you get the rust off before painting.

+1; I used this and applied with a small brush or Q-tips to touch up knicks and scratches from installing the motor. It's hard to tell where it was touched up.

First of all, not a good product to put over rust, no matter what they say. I have a much better suggestion, HOWEVER not why I am posting here. POR is not UV stable. That means it will turn to flat black after some time in the sun. This, is another reason it is not a good choice for a frame of a motorcycle.

The POR for rust blocking is not UV stable, that is true.  But, the Chassis Black is a UV stable top coat.  They have/had a gloss top coat called Glisten that was a glossy clear coat that has UV stabilizers.  Chassis Black is a high bodied paint with many of the original POR rust preventive paint.  You need to prep the metal and apply to a clean and properly prepared surface with bare metal on the POR 15 rust paint.  Chassis Black can be applied to a primed or POR coated surface as long as you follow their directions for top coat.

The Engine Paints for auto engines are very durable when cured , albeit a thick coat of paint.

POR rust preventive coating is unforgiving of poor prep or application.  It can flash cure if water is misted on it or the metal is not bone dry. Flash cured stuff or material applied over other paint will peel off in sheets.  Store it upside down as the material exposed to air after it is opened will setup after that.  It can setup in the can if even unopened, so buy in quantities you will use. The other products such as Chassis Black and engine paints etc will after a long time but generally have a decent shelf life if you store them properly.

FWIW, YMMV
