I want black spokes!
« on: April 11, 2017, 07:03:52 AM »
I'm a complete noob who's tackling a '77 CB550K café build. I'm planning a complete tear-down/rebuild. Here's the thing, I really want black spokes/rims/hubs with chrome nipples. I'm not finding any source for black spokes, and I've seen lots of advice on how NOT to color spokes but very little on the best way to do it. Advice?

Me too.

Someone said you can spray that stuff inside the rim and go tubeless! I wouldn't but you can.

You can use Duplicolor "Black Chrome" paint on stock chromed steel spokes. It will produce a decent, slightly translucent blacked chrome appearance. If you do this, wrap each spoke in tape during install to avoid scratching them up to bits. Once the wheel is installed fully, remove the tape.

And do this to your spokes with them hanging and free from the rim.

ryan, the flex seal just popped into my head.  i'm a noob too.  hope you don't mind some good hearted ribbing.  i've thought of painting my rusted spokes as well.  come to think of it flex seal might be just the ticket for mine.  if i do i'm rocking a phil swift sticker right on the side of my tank.

Truck bed liner could be cool. I thought about doing that on a tank.

Phil Swift and not Taylor?! Ugh, I can't even...

I bought a couple bags of SpokeCoats for cheap from a shop that was getting rid of them on clearance (I think I paid $3 a bag). They are a color sleeve that goes over the spokes, mostly for MX bikes.  I cut them to fit my ducati and they popped right on. Best part is if I get bored with the color or want to go back to original spokes they just pop off.

I powdercoated my own because my powdercoater was too much of a pussy to do it. "It's a lot of tedious work". Yeah, no #$%*. My hands hurt just thinking about the blasting process of all those pieces. They came out great and look wonderful.

I powder coated my original ones and they came out great. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't powder the nipples. They got pretty scuffed up during the truing and torquing.

Hmm.............I should really get back to finishing that bike

How much of threads would you guys advise to tape off before powdercoating?  Probably wouldn't be so noticeable if you had un coated nipples, in regards to thread showing.

Tape off all of the threads. There's no way of knowing how much you'll need on each.
