youre a brave or foolish man to go in a show....Im afraid I ride my bikes too much to be worried about getting a hundred points, but I respect your efforts...my son is an engineer and his 73 Ducati 350 resto is as close to perfection as I think its humanly possible, but Im sure he has a nut on wrong or something.

To get back to your sidecover issue, the best advice I can give is lube the holding grommets with Vaseline or Avon Skin So Soft and lift the covers off slowly and carefully.
I have fixed a cracked side cover using superglue poured in the crack on the backside and then sprinkle baking soda/powder on the superglue. It worked perfectly to allow me to keep a perfect original sidecover that otherwise may have been consigned to the parts pile, yet allows my bike to 'look' perfect. And its incredibly strong, dont know why.
Good luck with your show.

I'm going to have to try that super glue baking soda trick. I need to try and save my side cover. A section broke off with the fastener attached.

I think it's also near impossible to match the honda paint job. I've seen kits out there. Has anyone used these with success?

I did my K1 side covers last Spring.  For my purposes it was definitely a success.  It's obviously not an exact match for the 46 year old faded factory tank paint, but it's far better than the cheap-o side covers and Home Depot spray paint I've been rocking for the last 12 years.  The side covers and badges are repros fro DSS, and the paint is pre-mixed rattle cans from VMR Paints.  I have a spray gun and a decent amount of experience using it, but didn't feel like dealing with all of that for such a small project.  I was really pleased with how well the can sprayed and with the results, and I don't think (with my experience at least) that I could have done a better job with my spray gun.

When it came down to it, I wanted "stock looking" side covers, and I had long since given up on finding a good, matching stock pair for less than an entire paycheck.  When it was all said and done I think I spent about $400 on these, and they're brand new so I won't ever have to worry about them getting brittle in the foreseeable future.  I don't spend that kind of money easily, especially on something purely cosmetic, but this has been a looooong time coming, and it was well worth it, in my opinion.

I always remind everyone to get new rubber grommets and use a little silicone on the tabs. They can be safety pinned on the back side of the tab to avoid loss/theft.

I appreciate it, but the results were due in large part to the quality of the paint and the spray nozzles.  This stuff is no hardware store rattle can paint, and the price reflects that, but it's a good alternative to a decent spray gun set-up if you're not planning on doing a lot of spraying.  The best part is the 2K, chemically hardened clear coat in a spray can.  You push down a button to break the seal on the hardener, and then you spray and get the same hard, fuel-resistant clear you'd get from mixing it yourself.
