More on my car
« on: April 19, 2017, 12:25:05 PM »
So I can't seem to let my car go just yet. After the last minor issue of the throttle body, a near totaling incident involving a seizing rack and pinion was a wake up call. At 235K, its getting up there, but since it has a Jasper remanufactured engine that's only 85K miles old, the power train runs like a top. My buddy's autoshop recommended not totaling it and just getting the rack-pinion replaced. When work started on that, it ended up needing new shocks all around, new tie-rods, pins the whole shabang. Being its my buddy's shop, I okayed the spending since he gave me his discounted pricing on parts and charged minimal labor. Picked it up today, now the car feels almost 2 inches taller, and the ride is smooth but very very stiff. Turning is taking a lot of effort, as if the power steering was removed. I don't recall it ever being so tedious. Is this normal for the new rack or is it something fishy?

Smells fishy.  Seems like it's one thing after another with that car.
When possible, you may want to look for a replacement vehicle before you get nickel and dimed to death [or too late?!]

New car is what we decided on once this whole job situation settles. Good used cars in these parts are not all that cheaper than new ones, especially with all the promotions. The other option was to gamble on a "You get what you pay" kinda car from craig's list or something, but decided to invest in the devil I know instead.

I took it back and explained, they're going to check it out and redo the bleeding and such, hopefully its just that.

Hey Mo....consider 1 more option before buying new: a 1 year ld car with low mileage (under 15,000).  These cars can be $5000 less but will have a full factory warranty.

Thanks Stev-o, will look into those as well. For now I think the issue is sorted. Car's all good now, they adjusted the preload and its much better. Will drive it for another couple hundred miles and see if the new axles free up a bit. Loving the tight feel in the wheelbase now, hasn't been this quiet and steady in quite a few years ;D
