Speedometer disassembly/Reassembly

I'm continuing work on my 81 CB650 rebuild and need to clean the inside of the speedometer/tachometer.  I read that the snap ring must be carefully removed in order to disassemble the units.  Can anyone provide any advice?  Is there a special tool that's needed?  Can you reuse the existing ring or is it best to buy a new one?  I appreciate any help you can give.

Another question is:  Would it be best just to replace them with new (reasonably priced) aftermarket units and, if so, any recommendations / warnings / things to look out for?

You might want to move this thread to SOHC Bikes.  You might get a swifter response there.  This thread is for complete build projects.

Thanks.  Will do.  It's part of my overall rebuild project but I can see how the title is misleading.

Try this. Ignore the link in the article to the 750 gauge restoration as it is dead now. http://www.motorcycleclassics.com/black-side-down-replacing-Honda-CB-face-plates

And I think this is an acceptable place for this question although the regular board would work too.
