Speedometer disassembly/Reassembly
« on: April 14, 2017, 11:51:07 AM »
Hi everyone.  I'm continuing work on my 81 CB650 rebuild and need to clean the inside of the speedometer/tachometer.  I read that the snap ring must be carefully removed in order to disassemble the units.  Can anyone provide any advice?  Is there a special tool that's needed?  Can you reuse the existing ring or is it best to buy a new one?  I appreciate any help you can give.

Another thought is whether it'd be best to buy new (reasonably priced) aftermarket ones.  Does anyone have any advice / experience / warnings?

I answered you other thread too, but in case you see this first, read this article from Motorcycle Classics: http://www.motorcycleclassics.com/black-side-down-replacing-Honda-CB-face-plates

Will +1 the use of a paint can opener for the bands. I tried it for the first time the other day and it made things way simpler.

Thanks.  I read through the article and it doesn't seem that difficult.  I really appreciate your reply ... and all of the experience and willingness of others on this site to share tips/tricks.

It is a #$%* to get them smooth again. If you really don't have to open them don't.
