The Ducati Ebay Special
« on: April 15, 2017, 07:38:32 PM »
So got this today. It's part 748, part 2002 monster 750. Spe ifically a 748 swingarm, rear wheel, and front end. Someone clearmy pUT time into it. Needs some things, like an exhaust, but looks like a fun ride thus far. Not sure the direction I want to go out then clean up the headlight, windscreen, bars, and do all the maintenance. Open to suggestions.

You can call it a Mutant.  The 748 front looks good on it - stout.

Do just what you listed above and ride the piss out of the thing. Leave the exhaust unless its totally out of tune for the ECU.

Luigi? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Made some sense of the wiring today. What an ordeal. Every in has been cut, spliced, crimped, and a complete mess! I didn't make it perfect, just cleaned up the birds nest that existed behind the headlight, and labeled it all. To just get it back on the road, I ordered a cheap rubber mounted headlight with mini windscreen, this both saves me money at the moment (didn't buy this thing expecting I had another financially draining project on my hands), and covers up the wiring up front, which even cleaned up is a pretty substantial bundle.

I also found a replacent header in good condition for the exhaust, since the half arsed unit on there was made from a set of kooks headers haha, it even says kooks on it still! The exhaust on the market for this bike are insanely priced, with the high mount systems going for over 1k. I will likely measure the needed tubing size from the new header and buy a ton of material from my mandrel bend source. As far as the actual mufflers, probably the 18 inch reverse cone quiet cores from cone engineering. I figure I can make something nicer than what's out there for less than half the price.

The monoshock work to accomodate the 748 swingarm seems to be mechanically sound, but it's butt ugly. I will have to break it all down to clean it up, which right now I really don't want to do. Did I mention the seat covers it? That's probably why the previous owner didn't make it pretty in the first place. All kidding aside, I'm going to want to get the frame in a jig and verify everything come winter. The shoddy work I have found thus far has me in the mindset to leave no stone unturned. It seems the "mechanic" that fiddled with it prior was of the camp that gets it to work, but has no care to make it look decent, which for me is not good enough.

I think long term, the only way I can make this into something special is to relocate the ecu and battery where the airbox used to be (lower in the trellis frame) which would give me the chance to do a custom gas tank, much lower and sleeker. Then, I can do a seat to match. However, the reason I picked this bike up was to have a commuter, not another bike in a box, I don't have the money available to take it on right now.

I think I am just going to make this rideable for the summer, then I will do a full teardown come next winter. With that in mind the list of to do's is as follows:

Headlight mounts (ordered)
headlight (ordered)
Header (ordered)
high mount exhaust (will probably fabricate to save money)
undertail plate bracket (will probably make as well)
belts, plugs, oil, etc
ride it until something fails

Ha ha, I'm only talking from personal experience Steve, but to be fair, the modern Ducati's, if maintained, are pretty robust, compared to their predecessors, so that was a little "tongue in cheek". ;D

Alright, got the front end done. New headlight brackets, lsl headlight, adjusted everything properly, 5 hours to clean up all the wiring, and it looks a hell of a lot better. I'll take proper photos in daylight tomorrow.

What's your location? I just sold my Monster and "might" have some spare parts. Buyer is taking most so at this time not sure what leftovers I will have. Mine was the 06 S2R model but most interchange.

I only ship within the US is why I ask.

NY is doable. The buyer says he wants things but will see when he picks it up. Here is a link to my ad in the Monster forum. Not shown is a stock set of Magura handlebars. Might have a stock seat but not sure if the seat latch was the same.

2002. I'm looking specifically for a new front cowl, this one is shot. Also the plastic rings that hold the front fender on, one of mine is damaged.

I have those, mounts around lower fork. Might have some spray paint on them as I used them to mask my fork lowers when repainting.

PM your addy, I'll ship out first of week. How many?

Oh, I need to look for them first but they are somewhere.  ;D

Yours has the metal tank correct?

Never tilt the tank much beyond the support prop. Not sure of the metal tank but on the plastic tanks it would crack the rear mounting bolts on the hinge causing leaks.

If you are missing the prop I have one for sale in the link I provided. Ducati gets $26 for it. Welcome to Italian motorcycles.

Ducatis are fussy but the most grins of any motorcycle I have owned. Next to the CBX.

Let me know if you need anything else. Just might have it.

I have a complete exhaust but not sure if the buyer wants it. First, the cat and pipes won't fit but the stock mufflers should if you fabricate. Down pipes ahead of the muffler might also.

I'll let you know. I can contact a friend that has the same bike. He might have the whole thing.

What's your cc? 900?

Thanks for all the input, and I do want that tank prop let me know how much. Yes mine is steel and it's a 750. I already ordered all the exhaust goodies but thanks. I'm having a hard time finding that front cowl or windscreen or whatever it's called. I found an aftermarket one in carbon fiber, but I can't find the clear screen that goes into it anywhere. It's the part I just make frosted looking in this photo.

Welcome.

Aftermarket windscreens are easy to find. What is wrong with the fly screen? Looks ok to me.

Sent PM on prop. Need grips or micro switches for the brake and clutch?
