Purchase inquiry
« on: April 16, 2017, 11:43:09 AM »
Greetings,

New to the forum here,, was trying to find a post about buying used motors etc.

I found a local guy selling 2 CB750 SOHC engines, Frame etc.  my question is what should i look for when i go look at the engines? they look pretty dirty...

Cheers!

Be sure to take off the front sprocket cover, secured by 2 or 3 JIS screws (not philips) to inspect the case for cracks.

James is right on with big numero uno.  Other than that, if intake and exhaust and spark plug ports are not plugged with something, I'd be very wary.

Make sure they turn free, shift into all gears, and have some feeling of compression.  Bring a reference of serial numbers so you can tell what year they are.   Unless they are sandcast or k0, I would not pay more than a couple hundred an engine.  They are absolutely not rare.

Keep an eye out for broken or welded motor mount, over the sprocket cover, cracked behind point cover, damaged dyno cover..often welded.
Any motors with serial number starting with 1, worth grabbing.

Well, I stopped and looked at the lot today. One engine is stuck and one is free... said they came off a barn bike, smelled like turpentine? Seemed to shift through all gears couldn't really tell...

VIN CB750E 2026xxxx on the one that is free, plenty of parts,,,

Still nervous about it..

500 for everything, what do you guys think?

What is the number on the other motor? $500 seems a bit high, based on what pics have been posted...

I didn't get that one because it was seized,  :( but its both motors, a frame, 4 carbs forks etc. for 500, is that still too high?

$500 is a lot for a pile of nasty looking parts. Is there a title? Wheels? Gauges? Unless the stuck motor is a sandcast, it's too high, IMHO.

There is a gauge cluster, (speedo, tach) there is a title, wheels but they are de-spokes and no rubber,

I'm feeling I should just pass and be patient for a better find,, :(

I say get over there with a truck and 1500 cash....and have a blast riding all summer long  8)

It'll need a full tuneup, but otherwise it looks nice.

+1.   And take off that silly sissy bar and you have a nice looking bike.

FYI - that does not look to be original paint/color, but looks like a nice repaint.
