Topic: She finally lives! Project 466

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted anything, but today I got my bike complete, all the wiring is doing, all the mechanical parts are done, she starts, brakes and runs!

It's been god knows how long since I started this project which was a mild 400 resto that turned into a 466 and a whole lot custom everything.

Anyhow, after a full day of finishing the wiring, I took the bike out for a shakedown, rode it about 3 miles, it was awesome so light and nimble, like ridding a bike, but as with everything  I still need to fine tune it, here are it's issues:

-The idle is terribly high, even with the idle screw backed out completely.
- I'm using one of those ebay 12 buck tachometers and it reads extremely high, something like 8k at idle, my idle is high but nowhere near 8k, I'll hook up the old one and see it's true speed.
-I'm pretty sure the timing is off, might have to shim the plate or something, since statically it can be timed to the t mark, but once it's running and I shine the timing light on it, it's nowhere near any of the marks.

EDIT:
- I forgot to mention that once the bike is up to temp, I'm having trouble finding neutral, the bike's running castrol gtx 15w-40 with the lucas zinc additive (zddp or zdpp).
-Also once up to temp power seems to go down a bit, not an awful lot but I could go WOT and the bike wouldn't rev that much higher.

 I noticed you said you had it timed to the "T"mark. If like a 750 the t stands for tappets when those are adjusted and there may or should be an "F" mark on the plate for 'fire' to set the timing.

Thought the T stood for Top dead center...but yeah, it has to be set to the F mark.

Your tach could be for an engine that's not a wasted spark system so it would register double the RPM. Still, 4k rpm is too high obviously. You might have to re-bench sync at a lower slide height. If I remember correctly I bench sync with a 3/16" drill bit.

I used a Castrol oil and added zddp and I always had a hard time finding neutral when hot. I switched to Spectro Golden 4 semi synthetic 20w 50 and I can find neutral all day long.

Are your points worn?  If you are out of adjustment slots to get it on point, then could be you need new points.

Sorry I meant the F mark. And yes my points are probably worn and/or warped, I actually had to file a bit the slot on 2-3 to get a bitmore adjustment on them, I did order a new set, that allegedly will get here in about a week.

BTW the slides where all benched with a needle as a reference, but know that I think about it, I did shorten the throttle cable, could it be that it's binding or maybe it's too short and that causes the throttle to open? I'll have to disconnect the cable and see what happens.

I found a post here that gave instructions for hooking up a tach similar to mine so I went with those and also another one I found on youtube, I might have to play around with it still.
