Ikon shocks and progressive front springs
« on: April 17, 2017, 05:01:49 PM »
Want to replace the original rear shocks and front springs with the Ikon items from NobleHops.
The rears will be 76-4001.  My bike is a 1972 CB750.  Any one use this setup ?  Just looking to upgrade without breaking the bank.  Any thoughts appreciated.

I have Ikons on my K2 and Z900, I tried Hagons on the K2 but was never happy. I'm very happy with the Ikons.

I have that setup. Put the progressive springs in five years ago and the rear ikons last month. The ikons made a huge improvement. My back is much happier. The combo is great together

I went on a gravel ride this weekend and hit a section with huge potholes, couldn't slow down or avoid them in time. So I stood up on the pegs and hit em dead on. The suspension soaked it up very nicely. Just buy em, you'll be happy !

I have these IKON shocks with OEM look
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Honda-CB-750-Four-K0-K6-IKON-KONI-Chrom-Stosdampfer-Federbeine-Rear-Shocks-/162477116953?hash=item25d4640e19:g:GeAAAOSwn51UakDy
Settings 2, 2

Front with progressive springs http://www.progressivesuspension.com/product/1465/fork-spring-kit
Not too much spacers, just so the springs have a little pretensionas the instruction say. The fork top nuts have some spacer built-in
Oil level min 140mm from top fully extracted without springs as they have specifified in instruction

Works OK. I had Marzoocchi AG Strada in the 80's so it was long time ago I used crappy OEM. Between there an older set of Koni.

Pewe, do you by any chance know the rates of the spring from progressive?
i have some from wilbers and they're starting at 5.5 N/mm, ending at 8.3 N/mm. just interested how they compare.

I have no idea about the spring spec. I just bought them late 80's.
This doc I downloaded from their site has same info as supplied with the springs.
Mine are a little bit too soft. I need to increase the spacer a little. I'll add some thick washers and adjust step by step until fork will not be too soft.

They are still in business. Change ride in small text to find which kit

Call Nils Menton aka noblehops at Restocycle for your IKON shock needs.  https://www.restocycle.com/

I'm not sure but he may have special SOHC.net pricing.

I recently had this setup on my K6 750.  Ikon rear shocks retro look, 7610-1296.
Progressive springs up front.  I did this last year when restoring the bike.
This setup for me did not work. The ride was very harsh.  I consulted with Nils Menten
over the last month and based on conversations I decided to visit RaceTech and see what they thought. (RaceTech headquarters is very close to my home).  I did this and they suggested RaceTech springs and the gold cartridge emulator for the front. They did this. During the first ride I was disappointed,  the ride was still harsh. I felt I was riding on a washboard all the time. I went back to RaceTech, they evaluated and decided to adjust preload on the front (this can be done with their springs) and adjust preload on the ikon. After which the ride changed drastically. The bike is now a dream to ride, smooth and responsive. working with RaceTech I saw how important it is for the front and rear to be adjusted to work in harmony, if not properly adjusted they can  fight each other, which was my problem.
I suggest working with Nils as he works with both IKON and RaceTech.

Wood - how is the preload adjusted on the RaceTech springs?

I've considered putting these on my Z1.

I put the order in tonight for the shocks and front springs from Nils.  I will install the rear shocks first and see what happens. Later I will do the front springs. I answered the questions on my weight and if I ride solo.

Nice! It'll definitely be an improvement. After riding the blown out stockers for five years it took a ride or two to get used to the feeling!  I'm finally not riding a two wheeled water bed.

My setup is not harsh at all, front a little bit too soft since I have just a few washers as spacers. Bike handles very well. I like the shocks Honda look,

The Ikon factory is just 200 miles up the road from me, but Ikon shocks are cheaper to buy in the US than here, go figure. Anyhoo, I've got them on my BMW K100RS, R1100GS, and my Harley XLH1200.

Great shocks, the Australian distributor bought the rights to produce Koni motorcycle shocks when Koni ceased motorcycle shock production, and the quality is as good, or better than Koni. Ikon is an "anagram" of Koni. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, the biggest mistake I made when I bought new shocks for my Triumph Rocket III was asking the guys on the R3 forums, they all recommended Progressive 440's, so I forked out $1200 for the crappiest quality shocks that were no better than the stockers. From then on, I decided that I'll stick with Ikons, even if they do rip us locals off...... ;D
