78k tank...gas lid won't open...
« on: December 13, 2006, 11:06:35 AM »
...the lids on these tanks are not key specific right?  The key for my other bike fits the tank, and turns it 1/4 turn, but the lid won't open!   >:(  Any tips or tricks to get it open???

I have a 78 and the ignition and tank use the same key #. There is a 2 sided spring holding the lid down. I will look at it tonite and see if you can pop it without damaging the lid.

I have two 78's - the matched ignitions and tanks use the same key and are not interchangeable.

Heat up a flat blade ( like a butter knife - when wife's not around). Bend at 60 degrees or so. Slip under lid and trip the spring????

Not sure about the K models but ANY key that will fit in the hole will open a 77-78 750F tank. I've got three '78 SS tanks and one '76 SS tank and every key on my ring will open all of them.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

any key should fit it, but to be on the safe side I'd just ditch the K8 in favor of a better looking bike.

jam a screwdriver in the keyhole and twist.  After you do this any key will work just fine.

OK Lum you have a bigger problem. If you spin the cylinder with the key, the key is not the problem. Now Ii really have to take a look, you may have to spring it and replace whatever the cylinder turns.

...yea, the cylinder turns (silver part in the middle) but its not the whole lock thats turning....I'm assuming there is a flat peice of metal in there that moves under the lip to lock/unlock it, thats just not turning...

The full travel of the key is 1/4 turn and the lid should "pop" open after just 1/8 of a turn. You're already able to turn the key 1/4 turn so something might be amiss with the hard plastic catch under the lid. I'm at work and don't have access to pics but I'll try and describe what's under the lid.

The key turns a "cone" shaped piece of hard plastic. There are two grooves(one on each side) cut into the base of the cone piece. When the lid is closed the cone spreads two pieces of straight wire(spring latch) which then snap into the grooves at the base of the cone, holding the lid shut. When the key is turned the cone spins so that the grooves are no longer facing the spring latch and the lid should pop open.

So thoughts as to why you're able to turn the key but the lid won't pop open?  The spring latch may have rusted up over time and become quite rough. It could act like sand paper against the cone piece and worn some shallow grooves onto the "non-groove" surface. If this is the case then light prying while turning the key may be enough to free the lid. Not enough force to bend the lid, mind you, just enough to add some force.

If the cone piece is somehow seperated itself from the key tumbler and is not turning with the key( I don't see how but anythings possible, right?) then the bent butter knife route may be your best option. If that's the case then I can post some pics of the latch under the tank so you can get an idea of what you're pokin' at :)

If this were anything other than a K8 I'd recommend using an acetylene torch to cut it open!!!  :o  :o  :o

Sorry, just sticking up for my fellow K8'ers here...

That's why I'm looking for one of the old style pop-top caps for my 74, I hate the key type Mine's all buggered up from someone using the wrong key on it and or prying it.

Dennis, you are correct sir. Lumbee I see you forced it open, which is what I would have reccomended, as you can see now there is not much to that lock. It that were to happen to mine I think I would put a magnet in there just to keep the lid down so it would not flip up and hit me in the nuts. If I were gonna steal gas from one of these bikes I would pull the hose and tun the petcock.
