Repaint '75 CB750
« on: April 20, 2017, 05:40:39 PM »
Doing a repaint for a member here. Thought I would document the work. Beginning pics, 2 large dents on left side. And once the trim was removed you can see the actual color it was.

Removing paint from damaged side you can see the dents better.

All paint removed and then dents circled.7 dents, two very large and one more that is significant.

About 40 pulls using a stud welder.

Base coat of Z-Grip filler, knocked down with 40 grit on a DA.

And finally a second coat of filler, this time  a lightweight USC product.

I think the flake apricot red was a one year only color for 1975 on the cb750. 42 years of Texas sun took a toll on that tank. So did the previous owner apparently.

I'll be painting a spare tank and side covers in flake sunrise orange, from vmr, in the near future. Interested to see how yours comes out. I've painted three tanks before with good results but never used the multi step candy colors.

It's definitely flake apricot red. I've got 3 of them.

When flake red fades, it looks exactly like flake orange.

I'm getting a set of covers re done locally in flake red as well.

It's not cheap since it's a 4 stage process; base coat, sparkle, candy, then clear.

Flake red was only available in 75, along with Planet Blue.

The two best colors! :)
My K5 was repainted with a poor imitation of Apricot. It looks more like Antares red but they did do a good job.

The tank has been sanded and then slimmed again with filler. The shape is there, just some final sanding. Much of this filler will be sanded off.

Bodywork is finished and the tank has been primed. A coat of epoxy primer, followed by a few of polyester primer. The poly will be blocked, to be followed by more epoxy. The final epoxy will be block sanded and then painted.

Nice restoration of that battered tank. How does the inside look?

Inside is a little rusty, solid tank though.

The blocking of the poly primer is finished and the tank has had a few more coats of epoxy. I call this paint ready. There is nothing that needs to be corrected, it just needs it's final sanding ,then paint.

I did a couple of them. Although flake apricot red was never available in Europe a lot of customers like it very much.

The color is done now. I'll give it a couple days, then sand and get the tank ready for the black that gets painted on the sides and the decal along with it.

It's a stock color. The owner had the paint sent to me. Apricot Flake.

As for filler, not much difference between polyester fillers. I use Z-Grip as a base filler. Then for skimming on top I use a lightweight filler. Now I'm using a gold USC product for that.
