2017 Road Race Reports
« on: April 21, 2017, 04:54:07 PM »
I know it's a bit premature, but I'm pretty excited for the weekend and thought I'd get the thread going. Too bad our weather forecast is crappy. John is heading down to Sonoma for the AHRMA race next week (lucky!!), so we'll have some exciting news from him the following week. When is everyone else's first race? George, Matt, Brent, TG, Rocketman, Tintop, Kickstart, TimV??? Other road racers?

First up on my schedule is the AHRMA event at Road America.  Going to get in some coaching and practice with a California Superbike School at Barber the last weekend in May.  Hard to believe it will have been 7 months since my last race.

What is on your schedule Haybus?

My body decided to stage an all out revolt as I'm nearing completion on my new bike.  My joints are ganging up on me for some reason.  Some old issues, but a significant new one popped up that has me solidly on injured reserve for a bit :-\   I'm not into the idea of titanium parts on a vintage bike, nevermind in my body permanently.

My first event was to be the USCRA May 22nd event next month along with Brent in NH, that may not be possible at this point.  I have a list of other events that I can run in this season, mostly Northeast US/Canada events in VRRA, USCRA, and the AHRMA race near me in NJ.  Barber would be great, but that a serious road trip and too far off to consider right now.

Good luck to all racers out there this season.

Sorry to hear you're not 100% George. Hope whatever is ailing you is healed quickly.

Forecast called for afternoon rain both days, and they nailed. We had two good practices in the dry on Saturday. Track was fairly cold and everyone was a bit off a normal warm track pace. That 6k bog has me trying to relearn the bike and track. I love how well the motor revs now. She goes past 10k so easily, and the exhaust note..wow!! Unfortunately, keeping her between 7 and 11 makes for a bit more work and she can be a bit twitchy coming out of a corner. Fixing that is for another thread though.

Was cold and slightly damp this morning during our single practice. Certainly wasn't setting any kind of blistering pace. Sprinkling during our first race, and the track had a lot of puddles and rivers from earlier rain. We were just tip toeing around the track trying to be safe. I traded places with my pit mate Chris a few times, and had him on the back section on the last lap. Held him off to the finish but saw the red flag instead of checkers. Revert to lap 4, Chris wins. 2nd race it's pouring down!! I don't think anyone really wanted to go out. I pulled up to the start line and flipped my visor up as usual. Steam is pouring off my engine and heads straight up to fully fog my visor. Starter goes over the wall, I flip my visor down, and can hardly see anything. A few drops of water run down the inside so it's like I'm looking through the curtains. I get the hole shot, but I can't see much. Feels super dangerous and I'm thinking I'll just make it around to track exit and call it a day. Most of the fog is gone when I get to track exit, and I'm still in the lead, but there's a lot of water inside my visor and my visibility isn't great. I'm in the wrong gear coming out of the corner to the straight, hit the bog, Chris goes past. It's so sketchy on the straight hitting the puddles at speed. My bike is moving all over the place and all I can think is I'm going down at 100 mph. I got 2nd place, but it's more like I survived. Not the best race weekend, that's for sure.

Ahh the art of racing in the rain. If you don't have a nose piece for your hat use some duct tape over your nose to direct your breathe downward...and leave that visor closed or only open a tiny crack so the visor still contacts the top gasket.  ;) Sometimes you can't do enough & I dig that Alan.

I used to be better in the wet...but now I'm in my 60's and I can't seem to get it right anymore!! If there's standing water there'll be no tire contact. Best option is to add a couple lbs to narrow the contact patch since they won't be building normal heat anyway. Too slow=no heat=no good. Increased pace to maintain any heat may put you on your head=no good. It's a damn fine line!

Hey man, two 2nd's is a great start to the season.

WMRRA Round 2 this weekend. Of course the clouds can smell a weekend coming here in Washington. We had the craziest weekend weather wise, and I'm pretty tired of this. I'm always hopeful the weather man will be way off, but not this time. We got a couple fairly dry practices on Saturday. Chris was the fastest in our practice sessions.

Race 1 we get lucky with a mostly dry track, after raining all night and most of the morning. Chris got off the line first, as usual, but John runs him down and I'm right behind.  I have a couple opportunities to pass Chris, but I check up for some reason and let him have the corner. I can't really explain why. I have a camera that can see my tach and it's pretty clear I check up a couple times, because I back way off. Maybe need to ratchet up my aggression, or desire to win? Anyways, I run Chris down on the last lap and get him at the checkers. It's up there as one of my best battles since you could have thrown a blanket over all 3 of us for the entire race. It starts an epic dump as we're exiting the track and continues to rain for a good while.

Fortunately the track has dried out for our 2nd race, so I'm pretty excited for a repeat of the first race. But there's a nasty black cloud lumbering it's way toward us. A bit of sprinkles as we fire up and head to the start. Not too bad, guess we'll all go out. If we'd have know what was in store we probably wouldn't have. By the time we complete our sighting lap it's raining pretty good, but I feel ok. Chris gets the start, no surprise there, and he holds it into turn 2 this time. I'm on John most of the first lap, but spin my back tire getting on the power out of turn 7. Well, that did it for my race. I know I switched into survival mode for the rest of the laps. I believe Chris stretched a decent gap on John, but he started to cruise, made a couple mistakes, and allowed John to close up and pass taking a 2nd win for the day.

We've had the worst weather ever this year, I think we've broken some records. Definitely makes you appreciate the awesome last two years of racing without any real adverse weather. Riding in a downpour is not my kind of fun. Hopefully we've earned some decent weather from hear on out.

John thought everyone might enjoy a rearview movie of him and Chris racing  ;D. I need to rubber mount my fairing to eliminate the annoying buzz. Need to better aim the camera so it's not staring right at the tach and fairing hump, but that's more for enjoyment of others. Might have a better video next round, but of course you won't see John or Chris in that video!!

Obviously I need to rev a lot higher on the launch!! I'll practice at the next round since they have a nice wide entry road. Also, I need to build my confidence to pass, but I think that comes with more seat time. Need to change my shift light to 10k now that I build decent power up there, and then pay a bit of attention to it. I notice I'm not always revving out enough in each gear. John leads the entire race, Chris is 2nd until I get him at the finish. John's motor is about the same as mine, Chris' is stock.

Enjoy

Ciao!

So my first race of the season in Vallelunga went very well, I managed to get a 3rd place behind a super fast Ducati tt2 and Marco with his CB650 (bored to 750). Also got 6th overall!

I have to say that the Italian Federation is doing a remarkable job with the vintage meetings, and more and more people are coming to the races in the various classes. They are even doing professional videos of each event, you can find them here: https://vimeo.com/user65645742
There's also the endurance race, that always brings to the track some remarkable machinery and pilots (like the Guareschi brothers, one of them used to test Ducati MotoGP's bikes). This year they also add Imola to the calendar (first weekend of September).

I'm very very happy with my result, when I started racing 2 years ago Marco was the man to beat and I was light years behind him... Can't believe that I was able to battle with him this time and overtake a couple of times! :-)

I've added a nice alu tank to the bike this year, made by mechanic Silvio:

Video of the start (I need to improve...)

A nice CB500, racing in the 500 class:

can attest that lapping vallelunga under 2:00 on a cb750 is some serious going.... Ric has made the shift from good rider to serious racer in a very short time,
unlike me, the guy's got talent!

Thank you Yossef! I did a very nice track course last year with a former pro-rider, that really helped honing my skills and let me realized I was doing many things dead wrong.
If you want I can put you in contact with him, he is still doing courses!

UK rider here. Nothing to report race wise yet but, after battling for 18 months to fulfill ACU medical requirements after heart surgery , I have finally got through the tests and been granted a licence. I have another procedure to go through beginning of June then I will resume racing hopefully. Not raced for 2 years so I will see how it goes and report back here.

WMRRA round 3 this weekend. What a contrast weather wise from 2 weeks ago. I'm not complaining, but it's a huge swing from freezing cold to high 80's, which is a bit hot for us anyways. This weekend was at The Ridge, which is slightly longer than Pacific, much more technical, and definitely in a lot better shape. Ran the track day on the Friday before to get comfortable with the track again. Typical couple practices on Saturday with our races on Sunday. I run an SV650 too, so I got to take that out on Saturday for a race, but nobody cares about that type of modern junk here. Practices went well, but I'm a bit off pace from last year, like 5-7 seconds. I thought the track day would help with lap times, but perhaps I need to see those numbers to shake me out of my slumber on the track. Chris and I both thought we were running really hard and were a bit puzzled with the times, but were hopeful the Sunday races would see our drive return.

I walk the track Saturday night with a long time SV racer and get some priceless turn by turn accounting of the track. Sunday practice goes well and our lap times fall a bit. That same SV racer tows me around on my SV for a couple laps in the SV practice and I think it helps quite a bit. Feeling pretty good after practices. Start of race 1 goes about as expected. The problem is twofold; I suck at starting and I'm dragging an extra 80-100 pounds off the line compared to Chris and John. Chris is phenomenal on the start, but he's running a stock 1975 motor he paid $100 for, so he quickly gets chewed up by John. Chris looks back at me and shakes his head like "come on man, go!!" I out drag Chris to the corner just because I have more motor and I'm quickly on the back of John. I'm a bit tenuous with passing still. There's a couple of times I could have passed if I was a bit braver, but I do make a pass in turn 7 by getting a better drive out of 6. But I over cook turn 8 a bit and can't protect the inside coming out of the corner, letting John back in the lead. That's how we finish, but it's not without some serious effort on my part. Shaved 5 seconds off my best time at this track, so I'm feeling pretty good about that. I head over to John's pit to find out he broke his clutch cable early in the race. John's lap times were right up there with his best pace for this track. Can you imagine running close to your best race pace with no clutch!!! He's a machine.

John get's a loaner cable for race 2. The start goes about the same, but I biff it even worse and can't out drag Chris to T1. I go a bit deeper into T6 to take Chris, and John gets squirrely and stands it up in T8 letting me by also. I lead the first 2.5 laps, but I know John is right there and he shows me a wheel into T1 on lap 3. I hit a false neutral coming into T11 and John passes me on the inside, but I have the inside coming into T12 so I could possibly save it. He out drags me on the short straight, I go too deep into T13 and he gets a bit of a gap, but I'm still pushing to close it up. I slip the front in T14 on lap 4 and it's over. I know I'm riding a bit above my ability and it's showing in my mistakes now. I head over to John's pit after the race and find out he didn't have a clutch again. Cable is in tact, but the lever has no movement now, hard as a rock. When he stood it up in T8 it was because the transmission did a down shift on it's own. He's lucky he didn't go down. But holy smokes, he was a second faster that lap. I have so much respect for him and his abilities.

Videos if you'd like to see the action.

Alright, my first official road race report. Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, MI this past weekend for AHRMA Sportsman 750 racing.

The Friday race school started off swimmingly, making a few easy laps to get a feel for the bike and track, as well as my new gear, all of which were new to me, having finished the bike only a few short days before.

I was able to get a full session in on the first one, but upon pulling into the pits, I found a small oil leak on a fitting at the oil cooler. They were compression fittings and line (all Russell) and for whatever reason they leaked. My dad and uncle worked on getting an oil diaper on the fitting to try to quell the leak just to get back on the track, but this was not the last time we say this issue.

Out of a total of 5 sessions (4 practice and 1 mock race) I was able to start 4 of them, having needed to run the mock race and not crash as part of passing the class.

Fortunately, I got my crashing out of my system earlier in the day, when I cut the inside corner off a turn and got a taste of pavement. The bike was not too bad for wear, with only a broken clutch perch and bent bar (had spares for both) as well as a bent shift lever (bent back) and a big scrape from the crank snout cover, which didn't cut through so no leaks there.

Having had enough of the persistent oil leak at the cooler, we pulled the cooler, cut the fittings off both lines and put them together with a piece of copper pipe and a couple of hose clamps (thanks Rosco!!) which kept me in the game for the mock race.

The mock race started out well, and by now I had been on the track a times, having learned a lot so far and feeling more confident, I was ready to go. The mock race is set up just like the real deal, with a warm up lap, number boards and a starting grid. I was able to get a decent start and got moving through lap 1 of 4. I believe I was finishing my third lap when the ignition broke up and a I coasted to a stop on the side of the track (ignition #1).

Upon finishing and passing my race school, I put on the back up Dyna I had handy. I was able to practice Saturday on this ignition but ran into the same problem only a few laps in (ignition #2).

Being close to home, I was able to borrow a good points plate but had no cam, so I made the 2 hour round trip to get the spares I had at home. We were able to dial in the points (thanks Chris!) and get me moving again.

Saturdays race had me starting at the back of our pack, which was behind the Formula 750 group. 500GP and Superbike Lightweight followed us.

I was really feeling good about the laps I was taking and was really getting a good feel for braking points, turn ins, apexes and strong exits, and on the lap after I saw the halfway flags, the race was red flagged due to a pretty serious crash on turn 3.

Sunday brought rain in the morning so most of the first round of practice groups were near empty. A quick rider's meeting ended with everyone wanted to get the second round of practice in before lunch.

I went out in the drizzle and putted a few laps, to make sure oil was under control and that the ignition was still doing its thing, and everything checked out.

Sundays race was a great start for me and though I have not seen actual times, felt like the most consistent and quickest laps I turned all weekend.

Unfortunately, disaster struck one more time, and the ignition (#3) broke up as I was shifting through the gears approaching top speed on the back stretch and I was able to coast into the pits.

While it all sounds like doom and gloom, I had a stellar time, made a ton of new friends, and got to hang out with family all weekend.

I have a Dyna ignition and a TEC points set on the way that will be fitted to the Hondaman resistor pack I had on hand. Hopefully the addition of the resistors is enough to get me through the weekend at Road America with much success.

More to come after Road America.

Glad you were able to work through most of the technical issues and were not injured in the crash.  There is always a learning curve.  Well done for completing your first race on a newly built machine.  It just gets easier from there.

Did the motor die completely?? When ignitions fail, it's normally on only two cylinders, so the motor still runs, but with much less power.
