CB350 or 450?
« on: April 21, 2017, 05:47:49 PM »
Hello all, in need of advice. If like to get in to a CB350 or 450. I'd like to stick with the 2 cylinder versions. Which has more part availability and less quirks? I like the styling of the smaller bikes and this would be a project as I've got the 550 at the moment. Any input or experience would be nice. Thanks!

I think or suspect the 350 is a bit easier to work on, i had a few..nothing scary.
The 450 has a few things that are different..like cam arrangement and tensioners..and valve torsion bars.. And I think its a good deal heavier..

Agree with Frank, lots of parts available for either but the 350 is less complicated, lighter and lower.  But..................it isn't the most impressive Honda ever made ::)...Larry

I've got both, you should be happy with either one.

I shuld mention the 350 is more whiebread but nice pretty looking motor especially last two years of SL version..but the 450 is actually fairly exotic... X3 on that when it came out at first.. Groundbreaking..

if you get the 450 it will be more fun for sure, but make sure it turns over.  Don't buy one with a stuck motor as the rebuild is a bit more advanced than the 350

I loved my 350 so I'm partial to those. So light and easy to maneuver. Also wasn't too bad pushing a mile or so to a gas station.

More CCs is more weight but more vroom vroom/fun. I fear ever running out gas again now that I drive a 750 and 1100. :P

In all honesty they look about the same and probably function about the same. I miss not having an oil tank too.

LOTS of available aftermarket parts for the 350.  You can easily get more power out of them than the 450.

not sure what people are talking about when they say there are more parts out there for a 350.  What parts?

I know the carb diaphragms are a huge issue on them, that's why so many swap to mikunis.

To me the 350 is just a toy motorcycle.  Not really big or powerful enough to be used on real roads.

My niece was recently looking to buy her first vintage bike and of course asked me to help [my brother not too happy!]

She found a CB350 for sale and I met her there, the bike was not in very good cond and the guy was just flipping it and really knew very little about it. I test rode it and was not impressed, it was a real dog.

Just so happened that a buddy of mine had one so we went over to his house and test rode his.  All original and only 3500 miles. Ran better but still not impressive, get the 450 for sure.

She bought this for $1900...

Will agree on this; Probably best for around town 0-60mph speed zones.

I managed to knock a piston rod loose on mine; it did not like going 70+mph on the highway. Mucho vibration. It would do it, but I'm sure that's what eventually broke that piston rod free and scored the hell out of the wall.

Either -- depending on what you find, year, condition, price, etc.

Maintenance on the DOHC 450s can be a little more of a pain. The carbs get in the way of adjusting the intake valves. Both are great bikes though.

Carbs sure do, I take both the cable bracket and carb top off when I do 450 valves.  Couple extra minutes to remove makes the job go much easier.....Larry
