Should I buy this $400 67 Honda?
« on: April 23, 2017, 08:04:20 AM »
I've been offered this bike for $400.

No idea what it is, although I don't think it's a black bomber.

Was running before it went in storage 25 years ago.

Any info would help.

I love that style! Black and chrome, knee indents on the tank from the factory? Yes please!

I'd try to see if he'd take $300 but yeah I'd be dreaming about that bike. I love paying $1 for each CC.  ;)

Yeah, that would be a fun restore. I love those bikes. They had a scrambler version too, but I prefer the normal ones.

I agree...get it and put it in the back until you finish the other project. Those just do not come around in that condition. Is the motor locked? Here is some info for you James.

The Honda CB77, or Super Hawk, was a 305 cc (18.6 cu in) straight-twin motorcycle produced from 1961 until 1967. It is remembered today as Honda's first sport bike. It is a landmark model in Honda's advances in Western motorcycle markets of the 1960s,[4] noted for its speed and power as well as its reliability, and is regarded as one of the bikes that set the standard for modern motorcycles.

The CB77 had, at only 305cc, a relatively big engine in comparison to most other Japanese bikes of the period, although it had performance to rival much larger motorcycles from other countries. It quickly built a reputation for reliability, and was equipped with luxuries such as an electric starter.

The CB77 was built on the experience Honda had gained in Grand Prix racing, and differed greatly from previous models. It had a steel-tube frame instead of the pressed frames of earlier Hondas, and a telescopic front fork.[1] The parallel twin engine, the biggest then available in a Honda, was an integral element of the bike's structure, providing stiffness in a frame that had no downtube, and was capable of 9,000 rpm. It could propel the bike at over 100 mph; as fast as British parallel twins with higher displacements, and with great reliability. Cycle World tested its average two-way top speed at 168.3 km/h (104.6 mph), and its 1⁄4 mi (0.40 km) time at 16.8 seconds reaching 83 mph (134 km/h).

Author Aaron Frank called it, "the first modern Japanese motorcycle... that established the motorcycle that we still operate under now, more than forty years later.

Absolutely! Looks great, just clean it up & preserve the originality of it, rather than restoring it.

At the risk of lessening supply for my own addiction, I'll say that generally, you cannot lose on a bike under $500. Whatever it is, either you part it out and get your money back, or you restore it (at which point you'll lose a lot of money, buy gain experience and satisfaction)

The kicker goes forward not backwards.
As a former parts man, I sold many RH engine covers, presumably from guys trying to kick it backwards.
Nice find.

Buy it,

I bought a leftover 65 superhawk in 1966 for $795 and got a,helmet thrown in. I wanted a 305 scrambler but they were tough to get. I had it 4 years and then bought a 1970 750K0 in April of 70. Wish I still had both of them. The "Hawk" WAS A GREAT BIKE.  Some of my old friends still call the "Hawk today.

James I can't wait to hear the story on this one. How in the world did you get "offered" this bike? Good for you man! Can't wait to see the pics when you get it home.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll be picking it up next week  :)

After I get it home, I'll clean it up and post pics.

The PO said it belonged to her husband who passed away last year. She's now trying to clean out all of his things. The bike has sat there for 25 years. Wonder what I'll find inside the tank?

I got offered this bike because my brothers father in law (who is neighbours with the PO) knows "I'm into old Hondas" haha.

Now I just need to make room beside the 78F project bike that I'm working on.

Johnie: it's no sandcast like your "find," but maybe this will be the first of many bike offerings that come my way  8)

Great score! I love superhawks. I have a 64 that I'm working on now. Though, I paid much more for it. That will make for a great project. They're so easy to work on

Well done James, that bike would be $6K here.......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Fully restored they can be valuable.
Though parts can be hard to find, and I always thought they were a pain i the butt to work on. The spark advancer is in the middle of the cam, the kickstart spring is a drag to deal with, rear brake is cable-operated, yada-yada-yada......
Those are not stock handlebars, even for a later model. But the titty-grips are period.
Hopefully it has a title?? But at that price you'll easily make your money back by parting it out.
Here's a crummy photo circa 1964 of yours truly on mine....complete with bubble goggles, all the rage at the time.

Nice find. Just remember the kick starter kicks forward not to the rear. A fellow I know got a real good deal on one because the fellow selling it thought it was seized.
