Terry's cheap-arse 1969 CB750K0 restification..............
« on: April 23, 2017, 06:05:48 PM »
Well I've traded my K1 for my magnificent RC51, and I still have lots of other bikes to ride, but I don't have a running CB750, so I decided that it's time to start on my 1969 K0 project. As you can see, I've done nothing since I bought it around this time last year, but the good thing is I haven't lost any parts!

Of course, over 48 years, there have been some tasty mods........

And there was a little goop in the oil.........

And a little sludge on the oil pump screen.........

My fave new tool is this Dewalt cordless impact driver, man is saves a lot of time!

Of course there's always a few screws that give you trouble:

But it didn't take long to pull the engine.

And there were no real surprises under the cam cover, apart from lots of missing nuts and bolts:

I got this far, and decided that I'd done enough today, so hit the shower!

Now I don't want to do a full on restoration, paint and chrome won't get me home, plus I like to fit 1970's era accessories, so it'll look more like a bike that's been pulled out of a barn after many years of sitting, and given a wash. I think it'll just evolve as time goes by, like my K1 did. We'll see.........  Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, hopefully not too much rust when I'm finished Larry, I'm off to the hardware store soon to find some paint stripper and hopefully some sort of torch hot enough to get the frame damage cherry red, so I can try to beat it back into shape. Wish me luck, I think I'm gonna need it............ ;D

I have every confidence it will be the pride on OZ when you are finished sorting the nasty bits out.

Getting on board with this build also. I seem to remember some of Terry's older posts about painting and few other rebuilding tasks that resulted in the bike he just traded away. I know I sent him a few shipments of parts that are more than likely destined for this build. The red tank was a beauty except for 1 dent. It's not as cheap and easy to send gas tanks to Oz as it used to be.

It took you all day just to do that? ::)

Better let your kids know, that when the time comes to put you in an old folk's home, they choose one with workshop facilities then this might just stand a chance of getting finished.  ;D

Ha ha, you're a cruel cruel man Martin, I said this was gonna be a cheap arse rustification, so I hope to have a rolling chassis within the week! (although it looks like it's gonna be sh1t weather this week, so maybe not)

I was given some gift cards for my local Bunnings Warehouse (hardware store) for my birthday last month, so I used them to buy a box full of stuff to cut the dodgy rearset footpeg plates off, remove the grease, rust and paint, a (pretty useless) gas torch, and a couple of rattle cans of Rustoleum 2X gloss enamel, which should be enough to do the whole frame.

I stripped the frame down to nothing, then cut the plates off, smoothed the welds with a flap disc on my 30 year old Makita angle grinder, then swapped the flap disc for a nylon strip disc, that ripped the paint and rust off without hurting the metal. Still got a lot to do, but getting there.

Fred, thank you for your input, yep that lovely original paint red tank, single cut fender, K0 oil tank and that bag of "big 8" bolts and screws you sent me will be going on. I'll see if I can get that dent taken out professionally, I don't want to hurt that 47 year old paint. Frank, yep, it's a later head, but I have a magnificent K0 head on a shelf here.

I'm looking for a good (doesn't have to be mint) rear fender, has anyone got one? I'm happy to pay a fair price and fast shipping if anyone has one? OK, thanks everyone for checking in, more tomorrow. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yes mate, small tail light. The chrome is pristine, there is the one big dent  in the middle and now I see a couple of really small ripply type dents that I'm sure will be under the seat, never noticed them until now.
I have no idea how much to ask for it, I'd be really happy to swap it for a HondaMan Ignition, if you haven't got one then how about $120 + postage, this will go most of the way to a newy from Mark.

Thanks Nic, that looks fantastic! I think I've still got a new Hondaman ignition here, let me go and take a look and I'll post a pic. If I can't find it, $120 plus postage is very fair. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Here you go Nic, I bought this one from Hondaman years ago, I don't know if it's a standard feature now, but I asked him to make me a special one that I could just switch from points to the ignition amplifier and back again if necessary. Swaps? ;D

You will use 2k black on frame or powder?
Good with a good frame. Other parts can be upgrades later.
I guess that engine will be standard?

It would be nice with a NOT modified engine in a CB750 to feel the difference.

Yep I'm just gonna paint the frame Pewe, just like Honda did 47 years ago. I've used the Rustoleum enamel before with excellent results, and I painted the frame on my K1 years ago, so I'm going to have to worry about powdercoat chipping when I install the engine, or have to pull it out again. If the original paint was better I wouldn't paint it at all.

The engine will be standard, nobody wants a hotted up K0, and I've got other bikes that not only go fast, but stop and handle as well. I think an ebay 836cc kit would be acceptable if the stock bores were shot, although I think mine are OK, but I'll strip the engine down and make sure everything's perfect. I don't want to paint the engine, the original case paint is mostly there, so I think I'll just clean it up, patina's the current fashion, and anyway, it's only original once.

I found a good K1 seat in my garage that I'd forgotten about, I think I'll just install it for the time being, but I'll order a repro seat foam and cover from Yamiya rather than buy a complete repro seat. I'm hoping I've got some good fork tubes here, I've got the proper K0 fork lowers and very agricultural looking damper rods etc, just not sure what I've got in the fork tube department?

It's been pissing down rain for the last few days so progress has slowed, but if the sun comes out today I'll start stripping the engine in the patio, rather than drag my bikes out of the garage and risk getting them wet. Oh for a bigger garage......... ;D

Bigger garage :o too many bikes mate. Just thinking, I have a set of CycleX Ist over pistons and rings etc if you think you need em rather than reboring out to 65mil. They have about 2500Ks on em, would be perfect for you.
