Oh man  :-\  I hope Babyface is getting a couple steak dinners!  Good Healing Bill!
Bill can't cut his meat (Babyface's) with that hand chewed up that way. Better stick to ground beef for a few days.  ;)

Yikes sorry to see that!  You should see legal counsel if you are interested.  My patents 10lb Schnoodle nipped at a UPS driver, didn't draw blood, and he seued my parents for $5k and won.  My parents insurance covered it, but this is much more serious and there should be consequences for neglectful owners who put others at risk  >:(

I live in the State Capital of Ohio = Columbus, Ohio and the free running pit bulls attacks are at all time highs, even deaths of young children. When I slide my hand into my pocket and feel the steel grip of a 380 RUGER when me and my girlfriend are walking her two little dogs [ on leashes ] bad things will happen if these type dogs come to kill my DRAG RACING puppies, that spend their lives being protected by me and my lady at home or at the track. One of the reason me and my LADY GOT CONCEAL CARRYS !!!!! As Dirty HARRY said " Make My Day dumb ass " animal or human. Damm Bill your own front YARD !!!!

It's amazing the connections we make with our internet friends. I never met Bill except a few conversations on here but it feels the same as if a neighbor or close friend were injured. Heal quickly my friend and thank goodness for Babyface. My dogs always start out going to the drag strip and I think it's a good thing, they get used to loud noises and lots of people.
I hope to make it to Valdosta and meet a few of you guys in person.

Doing low 9's and high speed on the strip is not the dangerous part here. It's just outside your own door.....
Pit bulls are breed to be vicious, right? More aggressive ones mate other of same kind. Like the humans in 3:rd world conflict areas.

I wish the clutch hand all luck possible! Time for a hydraulic clutch triggered by a button?

I hope that ear is just pinned back and not completely gone. Freakin pit had one hell of a hold no doubt. I've owned several but they never showed signs of aggression towards other dogs unless provoked and certainly never anything towards people. I suppose its how a dog is raised. Just like people.

Get well soon Bill. And don't worry about baby face. You can't keep a good crotch sniffer down for long.😃

Bill, sorry to see that BabyFace lost an ear in the defense, glad you both made it out alive.  Looked for news report about your attack but didn't find anything.  It didn't make the news?

It is not how you raise them and a owner's nurture that makes a pit bull a dangerous breed or dangerous dog.  While they can be friendly they also do not give warning before attack and they will even give counter signals before an attack.  Wagging a tail and giving a slight bow that normally signals they are friendly and want to play.  Then  when close enough they launch an attack and are notorious and statistically responsible for more facial and ocular (eye and eye socket) trauma than any breed of dog.
They bite hard, hold on and violently shake the victim, tearing deeply into what ever they bite and they will bite many times and in various areas of the body.  You are all too well aware of the damage they can do...I am sorry you had to live through that.

Many many children and even adults die  from them every year and recently a pit bull and another dog attacked and killed a man in NE Ohio and several attacks in Georgia.  January of this year in Atlanta area a little boy was killed by a pitbull and little girl seriously injured.
They were attacked while walking to school.

Keep it clean and rest up and take very good care of the hand, if it looks like it might be getting infected, better to have it checked and prevent it from getting worse and taking hold.  But, I would never expect an ER to be qualified to make that read.  Ina ladder accident I destroyed the pcl in my left knee and lacerated  below the kneecap.  It got very infected and a trip to ER where I was able to express clear and bloody fluid from that wound they told me it was NOT infected and 2 doctors looked it it.  It was at Tucson University Hospital...  A month later I finally got into see the orthopedic surgeon and showed him photos from then...his reply, you definitely had an infection and I don't know how but you / your body has managed to nearly clear that infection and that wound is healing nicely now.

So, leave the diagnosis to those who are well qualified, that may and often is not an urgent care or ER doctor.
If it is hotter than surrounding areas when someone else checks it  then there are very good chances it may be infected.

Hope you are feeling some better.  3rd day after surgery can be hard sometimes, lets not add to that list with your injury.
Get plenty of rest and eat well...if you have any signs of nerve irritation or damage get it checked out, adding a good sublingual B12 and/or B- multivitamin is a good idea when dealing with injuries like this and especially if nerves are damaged or irritated.  Your body will use what it needs for nerve repair and regrown and flush what it does not need. Nerve repair is very slow...so, talk with your neurosurgeon or surgeon or specialist about it to educate yourself.  You are going to want to research and find excellent specialists for Physical and Occupational Therapists who have the training and certification needed to properly rehabilitate hand injuries.  I found a good one in Tucson when I had a cyst in the back of my wrist as it was wrapping itself around the tendons and being very bothersome.

Good luckand keep us posted... might want to keep the sidearm with you all the time.
David- back in the desert SW!

Baby face still has his ears....he got stitched up on that right ear and I'm guessing the cone was positioned in front of it so he couldn't scratch it.

Baby face should make a full recovery short of some unfortunate battle scars.  Same for Bill it seems assuming there are no complications during the healing process.  Infections are the most common I'd suspect.

Pit bulls are a fighting dogs bred to kill. Is it a Stockholm syndrome to think they are nice? World would be safer without them since people have them as a weapon. In the military guarding inside the hangars is OK.

Caucasian Ovcharka might be the defense against that kind of neighbours. That type of dog can protect the owner a little bit too good, though.

it is not a Stockholm Syndrome to not demonize an entire breed of dog. Babyface is a Doberman and when I was a kid they were vilified as attacking their own masters and attacking others. They were the "badass" breed along with the Boxer and the German Shepard.

I have rescued two Pitbulls from shelters. They were very fine animals and I was quite comfortable they would not harm me or anyone, and they did not.  As a general rule I don't trust dogs I don't know. I also don't trust every person I come across.

Agreed, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc all are exceptional animals. None are "bred" to fight, but they are intelligent and in the hands of muppet, irresponsible owners, they can all do harm. PitBulls especially because they have extremely strong jaws.

There are heaps of rescued PBulls that become dear family pets and deservedly so. Like too many kids, there's no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad dog owner (parent).

On a personal note, we lost a beloved Weimaraner to a Pit Bull from an irresponsible muppet neighbor. He prevailed in the altercation, but the Vet said he later died from the shock and trauma. Broke our hearts for years. Regrettably Animal Control destroyed the Pit Bull and not the owner  >:(

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. I have lived together with big German shepherd for some years. I really missed him when I left his owner. ;) He came from a breeder that mated dogs with good results in various championships, not only looks. He was well trained and understood a lot when talking to him.

Hey guys, Baby Face did get his right ear chewed by the Pit Bull but it is stitched up now and is temporally stitched to his head to avoid any contact with the cone collar around his head.

I know there are good rotts, pit bulls, shephards, etc.  I know man and I will trust them.  But statistically there is a larger than average number of pit bull attacks in this country and there are responsible for over 50% of the most severe trauma victims seen in the highest level trauma centers, a level 1 trauma center.
Their owners and how they are raise is responsible for a great deal of their  demeanor and to some extent their temperment.  But, they as a breed can easily be turned into a vicious and dangerous dog.  I like big dogs and I like cats..I had a chow -collie mix which was as gentle as the day was long with kids but a fierce protector of all.  She never bit anyone.  But she would read people very well...I had a guy giving me a quote for a concrete pad in my backyard for a utility shed.  He was a smoker and was standing close to me andour dog was standing in the other side of a triangle with her eyes watching him very carefully.
I don't know what he did but she read it as hostile and jumped up locking her paws around his upper thigh and was going to put him on the ground. I quickly commanded her to not do so and grabbed her collar and pulled her off.  I scolded her and apologized to him. Not more than 5 minutes passed in continuing our conversation and a second time I had to pull her off him.  At that point I apologized again and a while hanging onto her collar I asked him to leave the backyard as she apparently did not like him or viewed him as threatening me.  We would have to conclude our conversation outside the back yard.
Chows are notoriously given a reputation for biting and being an aggressive dog.  Our was not...she would let the kids treat her like a carnival ride playing with her and rolling around with her.  Small kids could ride her like a pony and she never once growled at them or snapped at them or the like.  She had every bit of the gentleness of a long haired collies...but, animals or adults whom she didn't know or had evil intentions best not step foot into our yard or it was at their own peril.

We had a neighbor with a big barking dog that would wake many and the police were called many times about it.  One night we were woken by it and the police gave us the warning ticket when she barked at them when they were shining their lights onto her and into our backyard.  The neighbor with the problem dog had taken it inside before they arrived.  I tried to explain this to the officers but they did a yeah yeah...and gave us the warning.  We literally  would have to either carry her through a doorway or drag her across the threshold to get her in the house.  Once you got her inside she was fine staying there but something about the doorways she did not like.  She weighed about 50 pounds and her head was just above crotch level of a tall man such as myself (6'4").  Loved that dog.
I do not doubt Frank's Pit Bulls are good dogs as are probably others, apologies if I have offended you.
I still contend Pit Bulls are dangerous, which ever breed or cross breed of those commonly called pit bulls (terriers) belong to...
An animal control vet in Northern Ohio showed footage in court of a pitbull that was tranquilized and asleep after it had locked onto an object and would not release it.  They tranquilized the dog to sleep and it held on still, it was dangling from a pulley and rope that object was attached to and the dog completely off the ground knocked out and it never released its grip and it was completely out...
That is pretty crazy in my book.
