Bike Stolen
« on: April 26, 2017, 04:53:38 PM »
So, I rode my bike today to attend some classes for work. The classes were being held at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Headquarters. I parked in the first row near the building. I went outside to get some fresh air and saw my bike was GONE (and nobody in the class knows me well enough to joke around with moving my bike) This by chance happened to be like 10 minutes after it was stolen. Luckily one guy's job in the class was surveillance and security at that building, so he ran to pull tapes. Another class member is a police Sargeant and we went looking for the guy. Witnesses pointed in the right direction. This brazen Motherf***er stole my bike from the parking lot at a large POLICE HEADQUARTERS!!! Turns out he was seen by another officer pushing the bike down the sidewalk a few blocks away, was stopped, asked if he needed help and said no. Asked if it was his bike, said no, it was a "friend's" on loan and was let go!! We found it on its side a few blocks away, ditched. I was just hoping to find him in the act. Handle bars bent, both levers broken, tank dented, exhaust scratched up, alternator cover cracked/broken. but at least I have it back. I hate thieves!
P.S. If anyone has a good condition alternator cover, please let me know.

Were there any good images of him on tape hopefully ? That is a pretty ridiculous crime doing it at a police station. Sorry to say but maybe the policeman dropped the ball a little when he stopped him for help and did not ask to see any insurance or registration and proper identification.  Sorry to hear about the damage, be a crappy reminder now  of how low people can stoop.

They believe they know who he is. On tape, (grainy and from above) but 3 eyewitnesses. I believe he should not have been let go. That area is not far from my fire station. In an area of crime, drugs and stolen mopeds everywhere, lets just say a pristine motorcycle being pushed on the sidewalk is a BIT out of place. On the other hand, he was let go about 5-7 minutes before I got there. Probably kept me from doing something incredibly stupid.

One time thieves wouldn't have given these old bikes a second glance but since the cafe craze these bikes are a hot commodity.

I keep mine chained up with a spot light on it.

Around here, old bikes are not stolen much. Except old HD iron, all hogs are thief magnets. Any Harley, newish sportbikes and cruisers - you better have a hefty chain ... and preferably a big mean dog on the end of it.
I take the key when I park but how much more can you do? There are lots of parts that could be lifted right off. Hopefully addicts never find out what good original sidecovers are worth! Probably no patience to wait for an ebay sale anyway.
I think your thief was a methhead or similar who figured his dealer would fix him up for a hot motocycle. Then he found out how little fun pushing one is!

Since these old bikes don't have steering locks what is a guy to do to keep someone from walking away with it or loading into the back of a pickup?  Not that a steering lock would prevent that,  just makes it more difficult.

Chewy has one for me, just posted in the classifieds. Thanks though. The help from everyone here is always so great!

And, yeah guys as far as the steering locks, mine has one but I did not use it today. I rarely ever leave the bike out unattended, I was just blindsided because I never thought someone would try this at that location! Even with the lock though, it just took me and 2 friends to lift it in my truck.

If someone wanted to steal something, nothing will stop them.

Sorry to hear that but glad you got it back so quickly! Wonder why he ditched it instead of continuing with his 'plan'. Maybe he thought you guys were on his tail...

I have a bright yellow disc lock stored on the bike and use it whenever the bike isn't in view or locked in my garage. It won't prevent the determined scumbag but it'll prevent the guy just walking by wanting to push it away. Luckily for us there are more of the idiot thieves than the smart thieves with thought out plans.

Crazy.  A buddy of mine got his stolen from a police station as well. (He worked there)  Multiple witnesses saw him pushing it down the street.
Luckily, 3 years later, on April fools day, he gets a call about it.  Got it back completely intact.

Glad you got it back.  Probably a good thing you didn't find him in the act.

Damn,

I have Grundy agreed value ins on my 750 as it's all original yet. Wonder how they could put a value on buggered tank and exhausts that are original.

So I take it you didn't use the fork lock. Just reinforces to me that would be a good practice I believe.

Dave....glad you got the bike back. I chain my bikes even in my garage. I have had stuff stolen and it sucks. If somebody wants the bike(s) they are going to work F'ing hard. Thieves are inherently lazy and will generally move on to easier targets.

I have agreed value as well. I did not use the fork lock this time given the location, but I will every single time from now on at least. This was a dumb lazy thief that would have given up had the forks been locked. As far as value on tank and exhaust, I'm just going to show my receipts as well as body shop estimates. See what happens.

I use the fork lock when leaving bike out of sight. Bike is always in my garage when not riding it that has alarm signs with camera.
I have not found any good second lock that our ensurance companies demands.
Dropping the bike is vandalism. Good to have full ensurance.

If my bike should get same damage I should claim new parts, no repair.  $$$$$

Yamina ?spelling? has the appropriate tank and side covers already painted...  i would not trust a body shop to do anything other than plastic filler and paint...not acceptable.  Was intact before, expect the same.  Unless your insurance company has weasel words to force you into accepting repaired tanks...   it reduces your fuel volume doesn't? A crease could fail in a rip if you have to lay it down later.
I view it as a safety item.

I would be expecting to see any metal repairs prior to them doing the primer/filler/bondo...

I have heard of idiots drilling a tank for a through hole dent puller and then not welding/brazing the holes closed they used body filler to cover the holes...  you can imagine how long that held together.

Glad you recovered it, sorry it suffered the harm.
Had to be pretty upsetting.

Your post was one of the titles I hate to see...

Hey David, thanks for the reply. Yamiya is where I originally got my body set from (as well as my exhaust), great stuff. I will for sure see how they are making the repairs. It is not a large dent, and there are no creases. I bought a pint of touch up paint a while back too. If not satisfied, I have already contacted Yamiya and a new tank in my color is around $700.
