When bad things like this happens to me I think that it was ment to happen to give me the chance to make better than I should not happen otherwise.

When I blew my first 836 pistons +  overheated rods + valves after a few months of use, a huge modification to summer 1984 that cost me as a new bike I was not happpy. But when thinking about something wanted me to stop riding to protect me against something worse.... I could not argue against that thought so I ended up happy and repaired the engine following winter. At the same time spliiting up with my girlfriend and move out from the appartment needed some positive thinking....

It might be ment that you need a better crank?
I suppose that the crank was not balanced. Use a balanced crank with lightened and balanced alternator next time. Rods with better bolts+nuts. I guarantee that you will enjoy the bike much more after the repair  ;)

A few thoughts:
1)  That sucks.
2)  On the bright side, we get to see a cool engine rebuild from one of my favorite posters
3)  As others have said, most importantly of all, you didn't go down and get hurt.

There's only one real explanation for this - it was Terry's fault... ;D

Thanks Ron and all you other guys as well.  I really never thought about "What if.." but yes, lucky in a many ways that the engine did not seize up, that might have hurt at 90 mph.

Just got home, decided to work on my buddies classic cars today rather than the bikes.

The '68 Olds Cutlass convertible needed a new fuel pump, running great now [has a 400CI V-8] and the '68 Corvette convertible needs a front brake job. Just diagnosed that repair[calipers, pads & rotors] and will prolly do it next weekend [not really safe to drive with a leaking front caliper!]

Appears the rod bolt broke [both of em] and I can see the rod cap in the bottom of the motor.

The rod bolt appears to be intact, not broken? Looks like the nuts came loose?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks guys, yes it will be better, stronger, faster than before!

You'll have to name the bike Steve Austin.

Glad you're OK.  Did you look for any shrapnel on the road?  Brave of you to leave the bike on the side of the road.  I don't know if I would have done that.  I wonder how many people stopped to take a look while you were gone.

No, didn't look for shrapnel, cars fly 70+ on that road, that would be a good way to get taken out!

This ain't Houston, I was not concerned leaving it for 40 min.

Damn Right, it was Terry's fault,

But yes, I do believe in one God and unseen forces and in angels, demons, and the Devil exists...in heaven and hell. Fate, not so sure...but I think sometimes things happen for a reason we may not understand then if ever.

Creating a path for all those chunks of metal to escape, an ejection port, rather than lock up the motor and test Stev-o's propensity for and quality of ATGATT is a good thing he should say a prayer of gratitude about.Yes, it is all Terry's fault!

Got the motor out the other night, but that fricken head is another story!  And yes, every nut and bolt is off, even under the pucks and the small bolts by the cam chain tunnel. I'm being very cautious as I want to reuse this head.... [insert lude joke here!]

Hope Bill B heals soon, he says he has some 836 pistons for me.

So you haven't got the head off yet Steve? Well if all the bolts are out, cam is off, cam towers off, all 4 bolts under the pucks are out etc, then just pull the head and cylinder block off in one piece and work on them on your bench, off the floor. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Or, stuff some cotton rope in the cylinders and rotate the crank. She'll pop right up. Might bring the jugs with it though depending upon how stuck the gasket is.

Hi Stev-o, I ride a stock K4 and will be listening more to my motor sounds now.  One of my front caliper bolts backed out while riding and sheared off about 10 spokes and i came to a sudden stop.  Luckily, I was just going about 40mph where there was less traffic.  Limped the bike back home and got everything fixed up.  Quite a story to tell about your K4 now.  Thanks for sharing your " Big bang theory."  ( The day this happened, I did a safety check before going out for a ride just like you)  God gave me a blessing that day.

Hey ut was a bike with a gaping hole in the cases.... Less likely to get stolen.

Saturday after we loaded up after the swapmeet, we stopped at a small pub.
My buddy said you probably want to park so you can keep an eye on the truck..
I said why ? I said everything on there is stuff nobody wanted to pay money for...lol.

Be interesting to see how bad the inside is.. Just get another piston and sleeve..if you can get one to match.
