i found someone locally selling a used crank shaft with connecting rods, bearings, etc. a complete bottom end. would it be a good idea to take both mine and this new one apart and combine the better parts of the two to make a better combination? or should i take mine apart and skip on buying it.
Im in the mindset that i basically want to just buy a bunch of parts all at once and just spend a weekend trying to get the motor all taken apart and try to really catch up on this project. Im under the impression that my current connecting rod and bearings and possibly crank are all toast. what are your thoughts?
This is unnecessary because until you actually diagnose the condition of your pistons, rods, crank and bearings, you are guessing. It would be unusual to "toast" a crank. What is far more likely is the rod bearing if there are very high miles (>60,000) and most of the mileage saw poor maintenance and care.
If you are determined to pull your motor down, do so then take the cases, crank, rods and pistons (keep them ordered together) and the jugs to a machinist and have them measure it all with micrometers. THEN decide what needs to be replaced and how you want to do so.
You need a rotor puller. For the life of me, I can't recall the correct diameter and pitch at the moment, but "I think" its 18mmx1.5??? Someone will correct or confirm that now that I've said it
