Protect your hearing
« on: December 14, 2006, 03:48:59 PM »
FYI

If a sound reaches 85 dB or stronger, it can cause permanent damage to your hearing. The amount of time you listen to a sound affects how much damage it will cause.

* A typical conversation occurs at 60 dB - not loud enough to cause damage.

* A bulldozer that is idling (note that this is idling, not actively bulldozing) is loud enough at 85 dB that it can cause permanent damage after only 1 work day (8 hours).

* When listening to music on earphones at a standard volume level 5, the sound generated reaches a level of 100 dB, loud enough to cause permanent damage after just 15 minutes per day!

* A clap of thunder from a nearby storm (120 dB) or a gunshot (140-190 dB, depending on weapon), can both cause immediate damage.

Decibel Exposure Time Guidelines
Accepted standards for recommended permissible exposure time for continuous time weighted average noise, according to NIOSH and CDC, 2002. For every 3 dBs over 85dB, the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur is cut in half.

Continuous dB   &  Permissible Exposure Time

85 db   8 hours
88 dB   4 hours
91 db   2 hours
94 db   1 hour
97 db   30 minutes
100 db   15 minutes
103 db   7.5 minutes
106 dB   3.75 min (< 4min)
109 dB   1.875 min (< 2min)
112 dB   .9375 min (~1 min)
115 dB   .46875 min (~30 sec)  My exhaust

Good post Sparty, y'all listen to him, I can't hear him :)

But really, I've always tried to wear ear plugs and what not, but
loud sounds have caught up to me so that now I have tinnitus.
It's starting to bug me a bit now.

I learned a while back that being broken and deaf is not as cool as it seems, so I just suck it up and wear the safety equipment.

I always pop in the ear plugs when I'm going for a longer ride. I find it makes the ride more enjoyable and strangely I don't feel as wiped on a long ride (3hrs +) if I've been wearing the plugs.

If your motorcycle makes 85db plus, just be sure to be going faster than 761.2 mph (at sea level ~ adjust for altitude) and you won't have a problem.
No.

Yhe sound of my bike isn't what gets to me. It's the wind..I have a 3/4 helmet, and I always zip on the ear cover part when on a long ride..ear plugs are a good idea too..

I second that suspicion.  It's a fact you're not as wiped out.  Same goes for wearing a leather coat in the summer; the wind does fatigue you.  (Besides, you don't dress for the weather, you dress for the wreck!)

I wonder if wind noise is more damaging than we expect. I work with Rail Road guys and they swear ccompressed air deafened a lot of them. If you have used compressed air to blow things off you know what I mean, I find it almost painful.

Wind noise will do you in every time. Wearing ear protection should be as high on a riders safety list as wearing a full coverage helmet and appropriate (motorcycle specific) riding gear.

GHOF out.

Living in Florida I have tried riding without a helmet.
I cant hear a damn thing at any speed over 45mph as the wind noise is too loud, (at least to me.)
I have worn earplugs for years while riding and it was mandatory in some of the jobs I've had - you know its bad when the company supplies ear plugs and ear muffs to be worn at same time ( worked on Ingersol - Randt compressors)

I've already lost some of the higher levels. For example, if I set my watch alarm, I can't hear it unless I raise it up to my ear. You see I spent 3yrs working on and around jet aircraft and a lot of years with diesel engines, 250-500cfm air compressors and 1.5- 100 cfm  generator sets (not to mention who knows how much time around the radio with it blasting out 50s & 60s rock & roll music). My point is, I'll definitely be trying to protect what hearing I have left and I hope others do the same. ;)
