Neat doodle Frank!

If you're hoping to improve your art, I suggest having a model to reference!
Put your analytical machinist mind to work and you'll understand how relative scale can quickly enchance your portrait realism!
Unless you're trying for some cubist abstract vibe.  Then all bets are off 😁

Does your dog have socks or is that the markings have delineated lines as pictured.
You can find a good book on proportions and figure drawing of people as well as animals.
There are rules of thumb used when doing figure drawings to make the proportions correct so you don't end up with a body that looks compressed.  Width of an eye (corner to corner) is generally between the eyes when viewed straight ahead/straight on...
The length of the nose and the face takes on typical dimensions. The body is a certain number of units/heads if I recall correctly relative and the neck another. Now these guidelines are adjusted to suit various people as some actually have longer than normal necks or faces. The height of the ears is a certain amount and the ears are rarely in the same position but if you draw them like reality sometimes it looks off. People with good symmetry are often considered very good looking, models are often gifted with good symmetry.

Now when you start turning the head or body you have vantage points coming into play as well as vanishing points...

Learned most of this stuff back in 9th grade art class. Have some artistic skill and took art class every year from 7th grade through 12th and even won some competitions at school for a few pieces. Generally received As in art class and sometimes A+ one or two Bs...

Animals are widely varied, especially dogs but dogs of similar breeds tend to have similar proportions, depending on the mix if mixed breeding.

Nice drawing...of your Sharpei...  don't let the critics get you down...they will have to put-up or shut-up on showing you how to do it better.

There is a fellow who made an entire line of RC airplanes called DiddleBugs, etc. variants of the names or plays on similar names...they flew well and were fun planes. Stevens Aero  http://stevensaero.com  Look in their Vintage and Old time laser cut airplane kits.
Not sure if they still make a bunch of them they used to make.  Things come and go and I think in many areas the popularity of the kits like that has waned.  Still a good airplane.

Hey just messing around with a play on words.... I can barely draw water with a straw..!
I was trying to draw wrinkles, not socks on the Sharpei..
Some great drawing tips put forth though..

Light and Contrast.  Drawing textures, like fur, is more about the perception of light and dark vs the existence of an actual line.

I totally recommend the art and composition lessons of Guy Atchinson - Reinventing the Tattoo is is book.  You can find redacted versions in pdf format online.

Even if pencil drawing doesn't turn out to be your thing Frank, sculpture is a totally legit artform!

You can draw better than me Frank. I bet if you put socks on your dog and posted a photo, no-one would be able to tell the difference...  ;D

Try clay, I can't draw a dog but I sculpted a good dog's head. He was a good dog.
The sculpture was OK too. My daughter took 2 years of pottery and my first attempt was better than her best piece and it made her quit. I didn't know that until recently.
