I'm doing it - I'm kicking Windows out of bed
« on: May 08, 2017, 07:15:44 PM »
The latest update to Win 10 really annoyed me, the one where they started pushing ads on my start menu and explorer windows.  Enough that I decided to cut ties with them as much as possible.

Right now I'm downloading a Gnome Ubuntu image - going to burn it to CD (or USB if I can find one) and from now on I'll boot into Linux.  I only anticipate using Windows if I want to play a game that won't work under Linux or an emulator.

I can't stand the forced adverts and widgets either.
I'm kinda numb to it from having an xbox1 - but at least that is gamer-centric and not like "hey want plastic surgery botox?!" All the freakin time!

Windows 7 forever!I have a Ubuntu box out in the shop. It works great for whatever I need out there.

Actually, I mostly use a Mac to do work, Windows for playing games.

This should probably go in the pissed off thread.
I ran ubuntu for years until I got a laptop that could run some games (not that I even have time for that) and i switched back to windows.

Let me tell you about Apple. Their planned obsolescence is so in your face obvious that it boarders on unreal. I thought since they switched to intel processors the computers would be less likely to be outdated. No. My intel based Mac mini says it is not able to run the newest version of OS X. Really? Not able? So now I'm lining up a Linux distro to run on that. I really like my apple products but the company is so #$%*ing snotty. It's like a bunch of children. I gave Windoze the boot back in 2010.  Currently running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on most of my boxes.

Mac has gone downhill since Steve Jobs died.  They used to put out "finished" products that were uniquely a MAC experience.  Anymore, the mooks at Apple are chasing their tails trying to "keep with the competition" - nevermind the legacy that Jobs had built 😑

So true.  Makes me sad.   And disgruntled enough that I plan on trying out Linux.

However, I thought I was told that games would run on Linux as well as windows.  That not true?  Does the game have to be "ported" to enable that?

Ads within the OS?  It's bad enough when they tout their own wares.    Do you suppose they got that idea from all the networks putting add within their show programming?

Fricken marketing leeches.

Some game makers are supporting Linux but the process is still in its infancy.
The problem is MS has most of the gaming market locked into Direct X for 3D gaming.
