Well as brave as I obviously am, I woke up this morning feeling lower than shark poop with this cold, so decided to take my truck for a drive to see the local medicine man, who confirmed what I already know, but was good enough to give me a couple of days off work. Bonus!

Coincidentally a pair of "Beeza Bars" arrived, so I thought I'd go out to the patio and install them, and while I was there I'd do a little more at the back of the bike. The bars look good, but I also ordered some pullback bars, so I'll try them on too, and decide which ones I like better. Regardless, they look so shiny and new they immediately made my poxy dented headlight brackets look even more awful than they did before, so I'm gonna have to dig into my pile of new parts for some new headlight ears.

After only advising another member about installing the rear brake pivot BEFORE installing the swingarm a week or so ago, of course I'd forgotten about it by last Sunday and installed the swinger, but as that was as far as I got, it wasn't too hard to pull the swinger to make it easier to hook up the brake pivot. In amongst the pile of mostly buggared parts that came off my 1969 K0 I found a filthy chromed brake stay rod, but once I'd cleaned it up, it didn't look too bad, so I threw that on too.

I'm currently thinking about wheels. I've got some nice Henry Abe's that need to be blasted and powder coated, but I'm still trying to decide if I want to go that way, or stick with spokes. I've got a fairly average front wheel (was on the K0, but is K1-6) which may clean up OK, but I've got no rear wheel at all. The K0 had a horrible 16 incher that was so bad someone had slapped bondo into the rusty rim, which also has the mother of all flat spots.

Terry's K0 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I remembered that I've got a couple of good 16 inch rims that I bought years ago, an Akront alloy one, and a chrome steel one, and theres a set of super-Redneck twisted chrome steel spokes in a box somewhere, so I might chop the hub out of that poxy 16 incher and build one wheel out of the two? There is also a steel OEM 18 inch rim there somewhere with a set of original (rusty) spokes, but I'm leaning towards the 16 incher to go with the pull back bars, sissy bar and turnout pipes. I think there's a Redneck law that says old CB750's have to be fitted with 16 inch back wheels, and I don't want to break any laws......... ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well I've discovered that as much as I think about what needs to happen to my build, if I don't physically do it, nothing actually gets done? So much for telekinesis...........

Anyhoo, back at it again, spent yesterday at the back of the bike installing the fender I "refurbished", along with the tail light I found in a tub, the bracket I found hanging up covered in rust and fly sh1t along with new seals and mounting hardware. I also installed a lovely chrome plated centre stand and discovered how easy it is to install the spring. All I did was I unhooked the rear shocks, raised the swingarm as high as I could, rotated the stand as high as I could, and the spring just plopped into place. I then rotated the stand and swingarm back down and bolted the shocks back in place, and "VIOLA"! a stringed instrument! As I'm probably going to install a 16" rear wheel and don't want a huge gap betwixt fender and tyre, I installed a set of "Lowering blocks" which will, er, lower it a bit.........

Redneck new headlight brackets by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Today I attacked the front end. As previously mentioned, I wasn't happy with the first steering stop bracket I made, so I whipped it off and fabbed up another. It took more time to move two bikes and drag my MIG welder up the driveway then it did to fab up the bracket and weld it on, but that's life, I don't own a barn, so space is tight. Anyway, got it on, splurted a bit of paint on it, life was good.

Redneck new headlight brackets 4 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The headlight ears bugged me. First, they're off a K3 or later model (as are the forks, but that's another matter) and they really looked poxy due to the dents and rust, and as redneck as I am, I had a new set in another tub, so I thought, why not?

Redneck new headlight brackets 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Redneck new headlight brackets 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Of course, removing them entailed removing the gaiters as well, and they were as hard as a 16 year old with a one handed magazine, so I had to carefully remove them, drop them in a container of hot soapy water and work as quickly as I could to get them back on before they went hard again. This was only partially successful, inasmuch as I could get one end of the gaiter onto the new headlight brackets before they cooled down (it was fcuking freezing again today) so I had to go find my heat gun to warm them enough to coax them onto the fork lowers.

Redneck new headlight brackets 7 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

And that was about it. Well, I did remove the bottom tapered roller bearing and grind the seat washer that came with the kit down from 5mm to 2mm so the steering stops on the bottom triple actually made contact with the bracket I welded on the frame earlier, but I didn't take any pics, so you'll just have to take my word for it, OK? ;D

Thanks men, while Nic obviously isn't a fan, I'm glad he stopped by, I may use the repro K0 seat that he sent me as I'm a bit worried that the "Drug Specialties" seat, although looking very comfortable, may be a tad too large.

I had a terrible thought overnight that the patient lifter, rated at 200 Kg, might not be able to lift the bike off the bench if I loaded too many more bits on it, so I hooked it up, and it had no problems hoisting it up in the air.

Redneck gauges by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I messed around a bit to put it up on the centre stand, but even with car stands under the frame it was a bit wobbly, so I eventually rested it back on the engine.

Redneck gauges 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

While I had it up in the air though, I cleaned and replaced the filter canister with a new filter and "Big Knob" filter bolt. The original, with the useless 12mm head had been "modified" with about half of the head removed, but with the new one with it's 1" head, it should last as long as the bike. (plus it looks cool, in a redneck way)

Redneck gauges 3 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Looking around at what I could do next, I dragged out an oil tank that I've had sitting in the phosphoric acid bath for a couple of days. Phosphoric is great for cleaning out old oil tanks, and removing rust, and usually will take the paint off too, but Honda must have used some good paint on their oil tanks, so I had to use regualr stripper, which ripped it off. I forgot to take a pic, but needless to say, it went back in the phosphoric tank to avoid any surface rusting until I get a chance to paint it.

Then I thought about the gauges. I don't have any K2 gauges sadly, but I had a set of K1 gauges in a tub, so I cleaned them up a little, and installed the chrome covers I bought from Ted, (Ricky Racer) mainly to cover up the tired old bezels. I do have a new set of gauge faces and assembly rings etc, but the "jewels" haven't fallen into the gauge bodies like they do on a lot of K1 gauges, and I kind of like the patina, so I let them be.

Redneck gauges 4 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I seem to have amassed several sets of mounting rings over the years, so I was confidant that I had a couple of good ones, but on closer inspection, most have been badly scraped, presumably as the bike slid down the road. As much as I like patina, I opted for a pair that were un-scraped.

Redneck gauges 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

So even though I spent 5 hours in freezing temps I didn't get a lot done, but it's slowly coming together, so I can't b1tch. Back to work at my real job tomorrow sadly, so probably not much more will happen until next weekend, but that's OK, it's coming along. ;D

That seat's gotta go mate, those bars, are they from 3rd gear, they look like some I bought from them, they said they were Pommy bars but were actually M bars which I don't like n I sent em back.
I love the K1 gauges and the original face plates. Do you wanna swap em for my K2 ones which are all new plates n #$%* but not perfect in the working of them, you know, tacho bounces, speedo is very steady but  not great after 120kph.
Oh and you gonna keep the speedo on the wrong side?
I can't let you have the dash lights though coz I need em for the Speed hut setup but I'm happy to swap gauges if you want.

Ha ha, you're right Nic, I do have them arse about, and er, I'm glad you picked up on my deliberate error, that I, er, did on purpose, yeah that's right, on purpose, to see if everyone was paying attention?

But seriously, yeah, I will change them around. Thanks for the offer for the K2 gauges swap mate, but being that it's a bitsa with parts from a K0, K1, K2, K3-K6, and of course a fugly arsed F, I don't think it having K1 gauges will matter, and I quite like not having the little idiot light "dash", I think it cleans up the appearance of the triple?

I like those Laverda Jota bars on yours Nic, I had them on my Laverda 750 SF, and kept them when I sold the bike. I've also got a set of copies that I had on my 836 when it was in "Cafe Racer" mode a few years ago. The bars definitely aren't "M" bars, I've actually got a set of 1" "M" bars here that Cliff wanted me to put on my Harley, but like you, I didn't like the look. Cheers, Terry. ;D

No worries mate, saves me a trip to the post office then. Yeah the Laverda bars, I love em, had em on a few back in the day but they don't love me these days, sitting lowdown don't agree with my old hands. I have the super bike bars? these days, you know, small rise, nice and comfy but they look crap I reckon but good for old pricks who still have the guts to ride even though we're invisible to the car wankers.

Yeah Nic, I rode a Jota in 1989 at Phil Beaumonts in Brissie, but the barstard salesman conned me into buying a POS Ducati 900SS, so when I bought the Laverda 750SF in 2009 and decided that I didn't like it, I kept the "Jota" bars, originals are worth big bucks. The replica's are good, but I broke my back in the 90's, so not much fun on a long ride. Superbike bars are good though. ;D
