The southern skies look really nice. I have seen it from a dark village on Koh Samui, on the beach. A Thai friend had different smelling cigarettes that made my perception totally different there in the pitch black place and thousands of stars. I heard the spiders and lizards running around inside the palm leaves roof very clearly. I turned to a better mode inside her (or was it the bungalow?) when she asked me to stay, not going back to my place alone (25m away). After a double she made another strange smelling conical shaped smoke. The bungalow started to rock, after a while when I cleared my brain we rocked it for real. I stayed there for 10 days in that way and I left to next place with my friend from home. Phuket, Patong beach, more women with perfumed cigarettes, well lubricated with no big bores....Flew to Bali (Aussi Mallorca) for a week where we did not dare to touch the anti mosquito stuff.

Same when going north back to Pattaya where we started the trip, another week there and another friend followed more north to Chiang Mai. Same type of woman followed me all the way on that trip, pocket with more smelling anti mosquito smoke rocking the world, clearer stars and night job... decades ago. A few years later same scenario on other beaches, in other #$%*es.... 8)  ...the 90's... riding a CB750 I have fixed by myself is good too ;D

Too cloudy here now, no stars... :-\

Thanks everyone, the weather is just about always nicer in my little home town than here in Melbourne, it was pissing down rain when I left yesterday, and I was 'rapt when I saw blue skies 20 miles from Bairnsdale. Good thing is Spring is just around the corner, so there should be some great riding weather just in time for the Bitsa's maiden voyage.

I've just arrived back from Bairnsdale but the weather here in Melbourne is nice today (freezing temps of course, probably only 60 degrees or so) but I've got my heavy long sleeved flannel redneck shirt on, so I think I might venture outside and see if I can't polish up a really badly corroded 18" Borrani rear rim I've had sitting around my garage for many years, that I might lace up to a spare K0 hub (I'd rather use a K2 or later hub because I'd like to keep the hub for another K0 project, but for some reason I don't have one) and throw a tyre on it just in case I decide to change the "stance" of the bitsa.

Bobby, wish your Ma a happy birthday for me, 100 is a fantastic "innings", obviously that Canadian whiskey and chocolate is keeping her young! I really hope my Ma makes it to a century too, she's a great ol' gal, and if it wasn't for all her book learning, would make a fine redneck. OK, I better go do something, I'm pretty tired as it was freezing upstairs in Ma's 80 year old haunted house last night, so I got bugger all sleep. I'll check back later! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Last 2 nights in the dark skies of Dolores, CO I thought I was loooking at some light clouds with multitudes of bright stars. And it wasn't the moonshine either. Turns out it was clouds of light called the Milky Way. Pretty awesome.
I saw that too, even better a Bonneville Thursday night.

Since we are heading into Fall he is rapidly approaching Spring.  We can't help it if he keeps his blood alcohol content up in his blood making it thinner and he can't stand the cold. ;)

You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink it and trying to force him will run the risk of drowning the poor animal.

What is that Aussie saying about taking a spoonful of cement and harden up?

In American it would be quit yer bellyaching  or quit yer #$%*ing

Do the English refer to it as Pissin & Moaning?

Ha ha, well my wife just told me that it was -1deg C, (30 deg F) in Bairnsdale last night, no wonder I was cold! OK, not being a Pisser/Moaner, I had a big cup of concrete to wash down a light lunch of rusty nails and razor wire and felt pretty manly afterwards, so I dragged myself outside and found that old Borrani rim:

Redneck Sunday two by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I've got some aluminum cleaner (which turned out to be just phosphoric acid) that I brushed on and left for a few minutes, so while I was waiting for it to do it's job, I installed that rusty old sprocket and chain I had lying on the floor of my barn in a puddle of mud for the last few years.

I found this power plug thingy in a box and thought it might be handy for recharging the battery if the bike has to sit for awhile, I'm not 100% sure whether I like it or not, but it doesn't really stick out like dogs balls, so I might wire it to the battery.

Redneck Sunday two 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Anyway, by now the rim cleaner had done it's thing so after I washed all the acid off, it came up pretty clean.

By now though, the afternoon was getting away from me, so I gave the flat edges of the rims a quick polish and was happy enough with the result. more to follow, wait out. ;D

Terry, scrap that rubbish 12V plug thingy and use Deans or XT60 connectors....they're smaller and their voltage and current ratings are far betterer!  ;D
RC aficionados use 'em to charge their LiPo batteries and stuff.

1st pic is Deans type, 2nd is XT60 which is what I and me crazy restorer mate use.  8)

Sandbag works great - used that trick on a CB360 fender - Learned the hard way though that you need a barrier to keep the fine dust particles that come out of the sandbag from scratching the chrome! :o

Well the weather was absolutely miserable today, cold, overcast, rain coming in sideways, but that didn't deter a good ol' boy from gettin' it done..... I'd decided yesterday that I better check out my exhaust system, as I hadn't looked it it in several years. To be honest, I was horrified at the amount of rust that covered almost every square inch of my (once) beautiful Jardine(?) slip ons.

Trouble is I didn't have a tub long enough to allow the pipes to be completely submerged in Phosphoric acid, my favourite rust remover. I went to my local hardware store to find the cheapest possible plastic tub that I could fill with the stuff, and the only ones big enough were so thin that the plastic castors had all broken off, and not wanting to risk dumping 50 or 60 litres of acid all over my garage floor, I had to think quick.

Eventually I wandered into the kitchenware section, and found just what I needed, a tall but sturdy plastic garbage can. I took it home and carefully ladled the acid from my old bath to the new one, and dumped the pipes in. I did find some more acid after I took this pic so it's now 3/4 full, so when I get home tomorrow I'll pull them out and turn them around, and if necessary, use an abrasive pad to help the process along. I'll throw the headers in tomorrow, they're looking pretty crappy too. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thick plastic bag, tube shaped that covers the pipes will not need more fluid than the volume of the pipes. A long leak free plastic cover to something...

Thanks Pewe, the garbage can is now 3/4 full of acid, so once I'm happy that the bottom half of the pipes are clean I can just turn them over. I won't risk anything flimsier, as the acid stains concrete quite badly and dissolves zinc and cast iron, so not a good thing to risk a spill. ;D

Thick plastic bag, tube shaped that covers the pipes will not need more fluid than the volume of the pipes. A long leak free plastic cover to something...

You can make a bag using a very thick roll of plastic a metal ruler and soldering iron.  You folt the two layers of the plastic across the ruler and use the side of the soldering iron barrel to heat fuse the two pieces together.

Inflate like a balloon to find any areas needing  touchup.  Fill it up after inserting your pipes in a can to catch  any leaks in case it develops one you will not lose your phosphoric acid.  A layer of extra plastic between any sharp ends and your plastic is a wise precaution.

Thanks mate, I also thought about just using a length of 8" poly pipe with a cap on one end, but the garbage bin is the best option for what I need. ;D

I got home from work after a hard day trying to look like I was actually working, while working hard just to stay awake, and lo and behold, laying out the front of my house was this old wheel! Well being the resourceful redneck that I am, I imagine that I can make it fit my bike somehow?

Redneck front wheel by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Anyhoo, it's not all shiny parts from questionable sources, I pulled out some rusty headers to use on the bitsa, and dumped them in the Rusterminator. I only had 3 cut headers as I'd used the fourth one all those years ago when I built the blue K2 BOTM bike and needed to use one of the cut headers to fix a badly damaged HM341 pipe, so I went thru my spare pipes and found the one I needed, and I won't feel too guilty about chopping it, because this one had had a terrible life. I will keep the remains though, just in case I need some part of it in the future.

Redneck rusty exhaust by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The good thing is that after just 24 hours, the rust is falling off, so by Saturday or Sunday, they should be like new.(ish) Cheers, Terry. ;D

No worries Andy Bob, there's an eBay seller in Italy who'll sell you a nice pair of those alloy rims for cheap, and (depending on which ones you buy) you might get them shipped all the way to Oz for free! Free is the preferred price for everything in redneck world, so the price is right! ;D
