Yeah Jerry, my missus is just happy if I bathe occasionally....... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

OK Terry, you have been a professional painter.... That's different...
I searched for more ideas for you. A moonshine distillery might be fine too if you can handle an airbrush.

Ha ha, beautiful pics Per, but a little over the top for this bike. The weather is improving, and so is my mood! It was in the 70's today for the first time in 3 months or so, and I couldn't get home from work fast enough. I'm trying to remember the last time I painted a gas tank, I'm guessing that it was at least 5 years ago? Time really does fly..........

Anyhoo, I still needed to remove the last of the crappy old leftover paint on the sides of the tank. Rather than use more chemical stripper, I thought I'd fire up my 7 inch sander/polisher with the nylon 3M strip disc, and once I almost cut my little finger off (massive exaggeration, it's more of a scratch, but it stung and bled like a bastaard) I remembered that I'd made a stand for prepping/painting tanks 20 or 30 years ago, so once I found it and mounted the tank on it, it was a piece of cake to remove the last of the paint and surface rust.

Redneck rusty tank by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Now if the insides was as clean I would have started the prep to paint it, but it is pretty horrible inside.

Redneck rusty tank 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

So I shoved it in the phosphoric acid bath. It was a pretty tight fit and I wish the bath was a little deeper, but no biggie, I'll turn it around every day until I'm ready to prep it for paint. Should be nice and clean within a couple of days. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ha ha, yeah Ron, that's the way to do it, although I always liked that woodchipper scene out of "Fargo". I had a rather infamous relative who was a member of a violent crime gang and hitman here back in the 1970's, he disappeared and was never found, rumor was he ended up in cans of dog food. Ah, the good old days............. ;D

Well it's Friday night here as I type this drivel, but not just any Friday night, it's the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final Eve! Why do I care, you ask? Well because it's a public holiday of course, so I have an extra day this weekend to get sh1t done! Of course Murphy's law rules supreme, and the weather forecast for the whole three days is pretty crap, cold(ish) showers, windy, blah blah blah. Emily, another of the family's big fat cats probably had the right idea, and hardly moved from the freshly washed towels.

Emily the cat 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Anyhoo, I cleaned up my front wheel mounting hardware and mounted my shiny front wheel and brake caliper mount.

Redneck swiss cheese brakes by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The next issue, that ended up taking up most of my day, was the fcuking caliper. I had several to choose from, but they were all in a sh1t state, so I chose one that was still complete. Getting it apart was easy, well, until I had to remove the old brake pad and piston. The old pad was seriously welded in place, and no amount of heat and WD40 would move it, so I had to drill it out. Then I realised that the PO had installed the piston backwards, so I couldn't use a bearing puller to remove it, nor could I blow it out explosively with compressed air, or explosives.  Fark.............

Anyway, cunning and guile won the day, I'd found a new piston that I'd bought from someone here years ago, it's one of those brown plastic ones, which meant I didn't have to save the old piston, so I drilled and tapped it for a 10mm bolt, to draw the piston out. Easy peasy!

By the time I'd done all this it was getting dark, so I packed up, and came inside. Tomorrow I'll bead blast the caliper and shoot some paint onto it, and maybe finish off my wiring, hell, I might even stop for a while and watch the game! Cheers, Terry Bob. ;D

While I don't need to disseminate advice on your build........ Fat Freddy's cat there is another story! While a cat or it's mother/your spouse likely think they should be feed more I find that mine can survive on about 8oz/1 cup of dry food a day (not 3 times a day). They may get pissy and annoying about it but just yell at them and give them a little kick to shoo them away. It works on the cat too  ;) Mine is only 12lbs and it has only taken him 13 or so years to get with the program. Plus he waits (most of the time) until I've had supper for his turn before he starts getting pissy. I wonder if part of this is why the kid decided we should call him Poopy Head instead of her original idea of Harley?!

Heck yeah, I mean like wow, ruin a perfectly bad caliper piston like that...

So, he put the piston in backwards...is it a tapered piston or something?  Trying to figure out what the backwards piston was so bad... no indent/edge.  Or is it a hollow piston design seen on aftermarket pistons put in backwards you protest so loudly?

It depends on how much brake fluid you like to use to move that piston....oz.s flat side in, or pints hollow side? ;D

Ha ha, well first off Jerry, "Emily" (no, I didn't name her, or she'd be "Satan" or some other cool name) is a Maine Coon/Tabby cross, she's only 2 years old and already bigger than Felix, and while she looks fat in that pic, she'd scrunched herself up to fit in the basket, where she's been enjoying the freshly washed towels in particular, since she was a kitten. If she continues to grow at this rate, I won't need a dog, or even a horse!

Maine Coon by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Frank, I wouldn't have wasted good grease to save that piston, it is buggared, I have a couple of new ones here including that phenolic piston I bought from a member here, and I was always going to replace it.

David, there's only one way to install a CB750 brake caliper piston, and the reason that I "Protest so loudly" (Shakespeare?) is that the clod who did that left out a very important part, the little steel cap with the curved top (item 21 in the schematic) that allows the brake pad to "tilt" slightly to allow the pad to sit parallel to the rotor on the CB750's "Floating" caliper. Without it, the efficiency of the brake is reduced exponentially.

CB750 Front brake schematic by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Brian, as always, you are the voice of reason, and I think it'd be easier to bleed a caliper with less nooks and crannies too! I better get some toast into me and get out there to get something done before the game starts! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ha ha, they're a fascinating animal guys, their "fur" is more like a Rabbit's pelt, incredibly smooth to touch and not like regular cat hair at all, and what makes them look fat is that their hair under their bellies is so long. They must come from a very cold climate, because they have long hair under their paws! Maine Coon's are from America, so I don't know that much about them, but they are enormous. Emily isn't anywhere as big as the one in the pic yet, but she's very long, and has big beefy arms and legs, so if she keeps growing, who knows?

Well the good news is, my team won! Woohoo! Richmond hasn't won a Grand Final in 37 years, last time they won I was 20, and my wife (who was my girlfriend back then) was only 19! Wow, my heart was in my mouth for most of the game, my blood pressure was thru the roof and I was sure I was gonna have a heart attack! I've still got a headache from the high BP, but I'm happy, if they don't win another one for another 37 years, I think I'll still be happy!

Frank said that you can't tell the condition of your brake piston before it comes out and he's right of course, but as you can imagine looking at the pic below, the caliper was in a horrible state with so much corrosion that I had to dump it into the phosphoric acid bath for a few days to completely rid it of the aluminium weevils. It was no surprise to me at all then, that the piston was rotten.

Anyhoo, I beadblasted both halves, pulled another caliper apart to liberate the missing piston cap and gave both halves a shot of satin black Rustoleum, and if I can find a new bleed screw and piston seal, I'll stick it all together tomorrow, and move on to the next chore! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Rustoleum can handle the brake fluid that can (will) leak when getting the air out?

No idea Per, so I'll be careful bleeding it, and use plumbers tape and a brake bleeder to keep the damage to a minimum. ;D

From experience it won't. But will hold up fairly well as long as fluid does not stay on for very long.  It's a trade off and since TB's Bitsa is a redneck fab Rustoleum fills the bill...LBB

David

It depends on how much brake fluid you like to use to move that piston....oz.s flat side in, or pints hollow side? ;D

That would only be true if you are filling the caliper everytime you cycle the brakes "on" and "off".  After filling the brake system it uses the same amount, there is an ounce or two if a hollow piston were installed to face in instead of out. When operating the brakes it is the same amount.
Didn't know I was going to stir the pot so much when I made the comments...
