Head gasket issues
« on: May 07, 2017, 11:09:50 AM »
After installing a new MLS steel head gasket I  have a leakage issue. It was done using OEM cylinder studs. I'm interested in input or
recommendations in this area. (OEM or aftermarket gaskets, APE or CycleX stud kits etc.) Head nuts torqued to factory spec.
Bike is a '78 cb 750K internally stock. Any input is welcome.

Did you mill the head and block? MLS need a very smooth and even surface. I did mine on the kitchen table with first grit 220 paper to remove all old machining marks, then 400. Last build same on case for the block since I use RCS base gasket.

Next can be the rivets holding the 3 layers together. These rivets were obstacles on my original head and cylinder. I drilled small dimples for the rivets in head and cyl block with 10mm drill (max 1mm deep) and I hammared rivets flat as well.

It should not be a problem with stock cyl studs. Stock torque is low if you use higher CR pistons. No problem to tighten 20 Ft Lbs. I did that with my OEM studs several times during the 80's. (today HD studs that flex less)

Milled headsurface?  If yes, then were locating dowels adjusted to compensate?
Torque, then re-torque 24hrs later?
Is the leak from the MLS gasket area, or is it coming from the pucks?  Both present themselves similarly.

^^ +1 to both
if all the above is taken into account, stock studs work fine. i use them with 10:1 pistons and have no leaks.
