stock forks/no gators
« on: May 11, 2017, 08:22:02 PM »
can the stock forks be used without gators in that there is another option, some sort of seals for the forks to keep dust out?

Yes they have seals. You can use without gaiters. But I like the look of gaiters

Yes you can use the short caps like 550 supersport use.
On 750 the 77/78 forks do not need chroming to run without gaiters or headlight ears, and lowers are longer..great choice..replaces 73 and uo

Yes, your 76 has fork seals. I would suggest using gators or the short caps to keep debris out of that area which can decrease the life of the seals.

I don't think I've ever seen a telescoping fork that didn't have some sort of dust boot or seal. Most bikes still have fork guards of some sort though, and that can take the form of gaiters or little shields in front of the fork.

Once you take the gaiter off the top of the fork tube can rust.

The harmonica rubbers are the best way to protect your front legs. I haven't had to replace one seal yet! Unfortunately the market wanted shiny things you can polish. The other day I saw Yamaha has developped an alternative.

Those are aftermarket, I've had them on one of my CBR's for over 20 years. This is the only pic I can find where you can JUST see them in the dark ;D But undoubtedly a Honda 8)

Okay,I'll rephrase it, they could be bought aftermarket 20+ years ago, some brands can have seen the benefits by now, because they DO work and protect the forks ;)
BTW what brand is a Concours?

Had those on my xjr1200. I'm in no doubt that they help to deflect most of the road crap from the forks and prevent dragging dirt through the seals, but they're not as effective as gaiters. Best to get into the habit of regularly wiping the stanchions clean I reckon.

754 should be highlighted, the old forks rust when you take the gators off.

Gaitors keep stones from chipping/ denting the fork tubes.

Chipped, dented forks wear out/abrade fork seals rapidly.

Style comes at a price.

it's not a style choice.  the ones i have on there now are torn up pretty bad and wondered if i could just take them off for now.  i plan on rebuilding the front end next winter and in the mean time trying to clean up the look a bit.

My original 75 750F uses these and the original fork legs have NO rust.

Just be aware that rain water tends to pool on top of the fork leg where the seal sits.  The seal retainer tends to rust.

Many CB750 has no gators. This is one of the first mods I and others did here.
CB750 original fork tubes look really ugly since they have no chrome under the lamp ears. rust will be visible at the bottom of the lamp ear. See photo of my bike when dragged out from a barn 2009. OEM fork tubes.

Later photo with new fork tubes (CycleX). Now possible to use slimmer type of fork ear (bracket) since it is chromed all the way. Same bike.....

I bought new Honda gaiters, they lasted 3 years then had tears in them, they ain't exactly cheap. I put the dust seals on mine, I was so sick of cleaning bugs off the gaiters as well. I prefer the look now n won't go back.
