76 750 charging rotor camshaft thread strip
« on: May 13, 2017, 05:36:39 PM »
Asking for a friend... he was attempting to pull out his charging rotor but the tool he was using was the wrong pitch and it stripped the camshaft threads. What are his options?

Universal jaw-type puller, followed by installing a new rotor? This might be a pain in the arse...

He was using a puller with same diameter bolt but with wrong pitch. Wondering if it can be re-tapped/machined in place, etc.

I would try to run the right size tap in it. It might clean up.

Your saying that the crankshaft bolt hole for the rotor is stripped ?  If the proper metric will no longer work a switch to the next size SAE bolt tapped and threaded may work.  May be just slightly larger.

Yes that's what happened. Think it can be done 'in place'? Take bike to a machine shop, etc.?

The fix, if that was a possible route would be fairly easy, that being said if you don't have the right quality tools, taps etc. and the experience may be best to let someone with more experience give it a go. The job is a quickie but the crank is a very critical part.
