A resurrection project....
« on: May 07, 2017, 07:42:59 AM »
Back in the fall of '88 I parked my two bikes out at my Dad's garage and they have sat there ever since.  It's going to take me some time, but I've really got the bug to get them back into running condition.

Washed off 30 years of garage dust and they cleaned up pretty well!

You will regret the bikes you DIDN'T buy much more than the ones you DID!!!  It's never too late to start a new adventure!

What a nice pair  :)

And probably worth substantially more than when you parked them up too. Enjoy!

Thanks!  I hadn't really planned to let them sit for so long.  My wife and I used to ride all around the mid-west before we had kids.  She was just starting to learn to ride the 550 on her own and she started having some health issues.  One thing lead to another and before I knew it, it's been almost 30 years.....

Thanks Martin.

I traded my Chevy II drag car for the 550 and we rode it until our trips got to long for it.  The CBX we purchased new.  Was much more comfortable on the long trips.  LOL

Your bikes look extremely clean.
If I've learned anything about building a motorcycle, it's check and re-check your work before you put it all back together. Although you do gain more experience by doing it twice.

Carbs are rebuilt and back on the bike.  Filled up the carbs with gas and it fired right up.  Sounds really great for sitting since the fall of '88.

Fuel tank is worst than the carbs for being wrecked.  Drained it, removed the petcock and stuck the shop vac hose into it with the hose reversed so it was blowing warm air into the tank.  After it was all dried out, a couple of hours, dropped in 25 drywall screws and gave it a couple good shakes to remove loose rust.  I couldn't believe the amount of rust that came out of the tank.

Stuck the shop vac hose back in to blow out as much dust as I could and then poured in 2 gallons of evapo-rust. Left it over-night and this morning the bottom half of the tank is spotless.  This stuff works great!!!

Turned the tank over with the fill cap on the bottom and plan to leave it this way until this evening.  If the top half of the tank looks as good tonight as the bottom half looked this morning, I'll be putting the tank back on the bike tomorrow.
