Aftermarket speedometers
« on: May 18, 2017, 08:33:35 PM »
Chalk this up as ignorance on my part - but when getting an aftermarket speedometer I notice that none that I can find offer a traditional speedometer cable hookup.  They're all magnetic pickup style.

Definitely not my preference - but can they not offer speedometer cable style gauges simply because they would have to know the gear ratios, or are they being lazy and magnetic pickup is simpler?

This comes down to economics and what is cheaper to produce in a manufacturing environment.

It would make more sense for them to use a magnetic pickup. That way it is truly universal, you would only set the wheel diameter and be done with it.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not knocking magnetic pickup style speedometers - I was trying educate myself on what I was looking at.

What about cable driven speedometers - so long as I keep wheel size constant are they interchangeable between bikes?
