Dyna S on Ebay - Dumb Idea?
« on: May 16, 2017, 10:09:50 AM »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB750-sohc-Dyna-S-performance-ignition-system-HONDA-CB750-IGNITION-DYNA-S-/252540578830?hash=item3acc976c0e:g:c7YAAOSwYIxX2iJg&vxp=mtr

Thinking of making an offer on this for my 750 build (I know everyone will say buy new, but I'm really on a shoestring).

Would $85 (or hopefully a bit less) be a decent deal?  And is the part shown the only parts that originally came with it?

Thanks

JB

I think he wants too much. You can buy new in the 4140 range, so a used ignition piece needs to be less than half IMO.

I agree completely but not one of my 3 motors came complete with a points assembly...  I figure if I'm starting fresh this might be a way to go.

Hondaman ignition module. This need the points and the old style is maintained.

I had bad luck with Dyna's. The oldest ones were really good about 5 years ago they went bad. Save your money and buy a PAMCO, Hondaman or just run points. Why buy a possible headache.

Points degrade from the first fire up. That is just the nature of the beast. Electronic ignition stays consistent until it goes  . . pooooff. That could be 6 months, 6 years or 60 years  :)

The rotor button, or "trigger" is missing from the photos of the one you linked to on ebay. I've bought used Dyna ignitions from members here, but I would not buy the one in your post since it is incomplete.

Brand new for $127 and free shipping:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dynatek-Dyna-S-CDI-ECU-Ignition-Honda-500-550-750-DS1-2-4-Cyclinder-/360531363039?hash=item53f15804df:g:PEkAAOxylh1SH5Sf&vxp=mtr

I run a Dyna S and carry a points plate on long trips. I can swap in the points and static time them in about 20 minutes.

That is WAY to much money for used junk.
You can find a NEW dyna S for around $125 all day long.

Personally I never really understood the electronic ignition thing on the SOHC bike.
Stock points work really well and do not require much work.

If points scare you, a 45 year old bike is a bad idea.

I had the same thought when I was choosing an ignition option. My thought was that timing would be easier, but in truth, whether the triggers are mechanical or electronic/magnetic, it still needs to be tweaked when you start. It's slightly more of a pain with points, but what sold me on the transistorized (Hondaman) option was that it was as close as possible to OEM, while reducing my maintenance work to nearly the same as electronic. This is a very expensive and special project to me, so I won't be riding it in rain/dirt which is the only reason I can think electronic might be better.

I love electronic ignition.  It's the only way to go.  Put a timing light on a points set up and watch it jump around. Put electronic ignition in it and timing stays very stable.  There is another brand but I can't remember the name of it. They make them for all cars trucks tractors and motorcycles.

If points scare you, a 45 year old bike is a bad idea.

After fiddling with bloo's points for two years, swapping to electronic made life easier.  In some ways, the bike runs better.  I've had the points dialed in really good, but it never lasted through service intervals.  An issue mitigated by electronic sensors.
Even yamaha decided to ditch the points on their xs750 in 77.  The change reportedly made the triple run smoother, and a variable timing curve was set to satisfy EPA requirements of the era.
More complex Electronic ignitions have notable performance advantages over electro-mechanical ignitions.  Well Calculated spark timing (throughout the rev range) can do wonderful things for an engine.  If that weren't the case, there would be no need for cenex c5 optical ignitions or powerarc systems.  Nor would dyna's programmable boxes be a thing.

I would never argue that the electronic ignition is not better then points.
I was just saying that in my opinion the swap just isn't worth the money.
To me the points are not the weak link.

On some bikes it is.  I would never own another Norton that didn't have a Tri-Spark system on it.

I don't see the point (no pun intended) on arguing which is better in the first place, it's his money he's spending not any of ours and he definitely shouldn't have to explain himself ..... although I wouldn't spend that much an a used Dyna.

Setting up points is way lower on the pain scale than pulling V4 carbs on, and putting them back on... Or changing plugs in a V 8.
Some people dont really want the bit of work of owning a very simple vintage four, I am sure there are a lot of plastic fantastic rides out there for them.

I like the "set and forget" nature of the electronic ignition. Dual points setup gave me fits back when I started my SOHC adventure over thirty years ago. With time and practice I can now probably set up dual points in my sleep and can often static time them spot on requiring no further adjustment when checked dynamically. They both have their merits, and I usually start with dual points during break in of a new engine build just to remove the possibility of a faulty electronic ignition and it gives me good practice/refresher for getting dual points properly set.

I'm all for fewer moving parts... to an extent!  ;)

Setting up points is way lower on the pain scale than pulling V4 carbs on, and putting them back on... Or changing plugs in a V 8.
Some people dont really want the bit of work of owning a very simple vintage four, I am sure there are a lot of plastic fantastic rides out there for them.

After reading about problems with both Dyna-S and Pamco....who will get a stop on a remote road?
Several reports abouts 2-3 that suddenly quit....  I have a Dyna-S on the shelf.

My Pamco did the same... I thought it was the coil..understood 1-2 years later that it must be something more when reading about popping 2-3  in at least 2-3 more posts here

Get a point system correct is much easier if you set point gap to minimum. Do it with a dwell meter (8 cyl) 23*.
Check with timing light again, both 1-4 and 2-3.  Too large gap and you will run out of adj when setting ignition. That is what I have seen.

If full advance will happen too early tighten the adv springs. This will happen to Dyna-s and Pamco too.

I see no advantage att all with mentioned ignitions. I understand those that use Dyna 2000 and similar where the advance curve can be changed.

I use points with Hondaman ignition. The only issue I have had is the condensers that gave additional pops and bangs. Probably one of them with intermittent function. I run without now.
