Speedometer Gearbox Help Please
« on: May 21, 2017, 08:26:45 PM »
I'm stuck. How does the piece on the right go in the piece on the left?  The gear inside the piece on the left just jams against the gear on the right and I can't twist it in or anything. Please help!

You should be able to drop it in and then turn the big gear behind the seal to pull it in.

That's what I thought should happen but when I turn the big gear the thing just jams up.  I assume I shouldn't force it, right?

Never had one apart, but my rule of thumb is never force it.  I can't offer any advice other than to say I'd look for something internally that's preventing the gears from meshing, or maybe they need to mesh a certain way where you either need to look for marks, or just keep playing with it until you find what works.  Barring that, there seems to be a ton of them on ebay.  If you're trying to clean it up, member noblehops vapor blasted mine w/o taking it apart and it's working fine.

IIRC there's a cap that screws on one side, no? I only know my '78 though, might be different.

As far as actually getting it in, make sure you're putting it in the right way, make sure everything is clean and greasy, and it should wiggle and mesh into place. Pull (and replace with new) the seal in the centre if you haven't already, so you can get a better look in there.
