« on: May 25, 2017, 09:14:32 AM »
???   Hey guys. Getting ready to crank over the cb550 for the first time since ripping it apart.  My ? Is how open should the throttle slides be for initial start up?? I can adjust later with the idle screw, just need to know where to start.

Turn your idle set screw in 1.5 full turns from zero, and give it full choke.
Hit it.

Its different for each bike.

A bench sync would have been a good place to start.  Do you have the manual?

Use the choke, hold the throttle, and press the start button.  You have to listen and feel for when these motors want to catch spark and run.  Just a little twist.

When you're running.  Then try to set the big idle screw knob.  A well tuned 550 will purr around 1100-1500 rpm.

Assuming your bike has its original carbs, your choke includes a fast idle cam that raises the slides slightly at full choke. You shouldn't need to do anything with the throttle when starting the bike.

I don't think the 550's have that feature. At least not the A series equipped models.

My '77 did and I don't  think the changes to the 78 carbs included removing it.

Only the 77-78 K models have them.
