'74 CB550 Transmission/Gearbox problems!!
« on: May 24, 2017, 08:27:56 AM »
Hey guys... need your help to try to find out what I need to do.

I'm building my own brat with a '74 CB550 but have transmissiom problems... I have been looking for a shop that can fix it but nobody wants to and I'm in desperation mode now.

Part of the problem is that I live in Baja Mexico and nobody is familiar with these bikes, when they hear the year they close their doors on my nose.

In summary I want to ask you for any advise or guidance on where I should start looking?

My problem is the following:

When I get to 3rd gear it engages but half throttle it goes to neutral every time, I shift up to 4th and I can move forward but when I rev it up I can't find 5th gear.

I would absolutely appreciate any help you can provide with your experience.

Thank you guys!

Seems you have a bent shifter fork.
Where you from Erobledo?

Even thought the transmission seems really scary to mess with. If you have the book/manual it's really not so bad at all. I highly recommend getting it back-cut while you have it out. I have done mine twice. The first time I put a gear in flipped the wrong way because I was rushed by having to move homes and was stupid. 2nd time it worked perfectly. I have a 750, I would have to think it's fairly similar on a 550 difficulty-wise

Only sucks cause you have to split the cases to do the repairs.  Don't know if there are NOS transmission parts out there either.

I had a broken gear in my 550 a while back and replaced it with a good looking used one from eBay. Worked like a charm. Tranny cost me around $30.

And yeah, if you're just replacing parts, swapping out a transmission isn't hard. Motor out, flipped upside down and cases split and it's right there.

The popping out of gear could be worn gear dogs. Back cutting would be nice but it's usually kind of expensive.
