I initially purchased one of Terry's oil coolers for my CB592 build. After running with and without it, I found no difference in temps. I have a digital temp guage installed and monitor it on my Motogadget Guage. Like TT said it just made oil changes more difficult and it eventually sprung a leak that made me remove it. Unless I race the bike I don't plan on installing it again. Mostly because of the reasons TT said. Listen to what he has to say.

Geez, you should have let me know mate, that would have been my first warranty claim in 13 years and several hundred units sold? Where did it "Spring a leak" from? Cheers, Terry. ;D

  I did not let you know because it was not your oil cooler parts that leaked. So not your problem. It was one of the fittings I used enroute to the rad itself. I could have easily fixed it but decided to remove the cooler all together. One day I will get bored with the bike and turn it into a track bike and that oil cooler adapter plate will come in handy.

Let me repeat, it was not a question of the quality in Terry's work that it leaked. It was the AN fitting used. Terry's work was top notch!  Thanks again Terry :)

My 2 cents.

The 77/78 CB750F bikes included some changes to shed heat from the oil system.  The sump has larger fins.  An additional spacer was added under the oil filter housing - an oil cooler.  My point is that mother Honda made some changes to help cool the oil for that particular bike/engine.

I doubt that anybody would argue that there must have been some need in order for Honda to make these changes to the 77/78 CB750F bikes.  Therefore, I believe it safe to conclude that the changes were made in response to the output of that engine.  An input could have been a desire to keep oil change intervals at 1,800 miles - meaning that it was possible to exclude these changes to shed heat, but a decrease the oil change interval to 1,500 miles similar to the K0 bikes would have been required.  Another input may have been the comparable lesser maintenance requirements of the other competing motorcycle brands.

Regardless, I also believe it safe to conclude that if the output of our engines is increased beyond the 77/78 CB750F engines, either a supplemental means to shed some heat is needed - or the oil should be changed more frequently.  I think we would all agree that oil change intervals should decrease as operating conditions get worse.  To upgrade your engine and not alter something to account for the extra heat just isn't wise.  You'll need to either get rid of that heat, replace the oil more often, or possibly use a higher quality of oil (that can cope with greater temperatures). 

The benefit of properly sized and thermostatically controlled oil cooler to a stock (or nearly stock) bike is that you could extend the oil change interval somewhat or preclude the necessity of going to better oils.  Certainly no harm would occur.

Thanks mate, even though I'm out of the oil cooler business now, (too many projects of my own right now) I'm glad to hear that your problems weren't caused by me, but if they were, I would have rectified them. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Is anyone making cooler kits for the sohc ATM? Terry j can't seem to PM you (indown inder as well) I thought you might have something laying around still

G'Day mate, nope, sorry, I now work 400 miles from home, so not in a position to do much at all at the moment, and I only ever made my cooler adapters to order, so no spares. I am playing with a kit I made up for my Harley sportster with 2 small thermo fans, I'll let you all know how that works when I get time to finish it. Cheers, Terry. ;D
