78 CB750K tranny question
« on: June 02, 2005, 04:24:14 PM »
I finally hooked up with the guy that has the 750 I've been posting about. Turns out its a 1978....not a 74 like I was told.

It already has a Cafe fairing, 4-1 header with a home made ::) rear section. Looks like a megaphone....sounds cool though, pod filters, new tires, brakes, and the engine has been gone thru.....rings, bearings, etc.....was shown the reciepts.

Now for the tranny.......I had thought it was shot from what the guy that told me about it was saying. The owner said he rode it 3 days after the engine was rebuilt and 2nd gear went out. When he got it fired up, you could hear a rattle. When the clutch is pulled and its put in gear it goes away. He rode it a few days by not using 2nd but was told if he kept riding it, it might lock up and toss him.

Would this be a costly fix? He only wants 400 for it.For what its got on it and what has been done to it, it seems like a deal. Motor sounds good and didnt smoke at all. This would be my first road bike....used to ride dirt bikes all of the time but never got into the trannys on one.

If I get it.......I guess I'll have to change my user name. ;D

More than likely( I may be wrong here ) but I would almost bet it is something with the dogs and forks just being worn OR needing adjustment. The clutch probably needs work too. As for a dollar amount, if it is adfjustment, then I would say $50 - 100 at most and that is with clutch plate replacement.
If things are worn badly, then you need to decide if you need to replace and the forks.

...depends on how much wrench'n u'r willing to do.  If u don't mind get'n grease under u'r nails, I'd say go 4 it.  $400 sounds llike a dealio...specially if its a runner.  If you don't want it...gimmie the guys number...I got a cousin in Charlotte who is look'n for a 750...

"3 days after the rebuild"? Sounds like something wasn't assembled correctly. :-\

THats why I figured it was misadjustment. If it did not happen before and now does, thats usually means adjustment issues. I suppose if the wrong kind of oil was used, that could maybe cause some kind of issue.
